The ViewLondon Review
Drinking in Camden can be an odd enough experience in itself, but when you’re blessed with the oldest barmaid in London confusing herself to a rock-a-billy soundtrack, you know you’re in for something special.
The Venue
The Golden Lion is tucked away off Camden High Street and consequently benefits from a less hectic and touristy feel. The pavement area outside has plenty of room for summer drinking, which is just as well as inside can be uncomfortably cosy. A skinny bar with a band set up helpfully in front of the toilets makes a first visit interesting, but clambering over a drum kit to relieve yourself soon becomes part of the fun. A full size pool table near the entrance brings everyone together, literally more than metaphorically.
The Atmosphere
Walking into a pub that greets you loudly with Country music and incredibly vocal support is initially a little disconcerting. However, the diversity and excitement of this shouting rabble results in a friendly bunch, ever happy to politely move when you’re on that troublesome trip to the toilet. In keeping with Camden, The Golden Lion plays host to a pretty good mix of people; old-timers and skinny jeans shouldn’t really mix but here they match like collars and cuffs. And even when the band stops the crowd stays in good spirits.
The Drink
Drinks are what you’d expect – not extensive but certainly adequate. Named lagers, a few okay wines and the usual spirits sit behind the bar, and only those looking for something exotic will be disappointed.
The Last Word
The Golden Lion is doing something right – it’s nigh on impossible not to get caught up in the madness.
