The ViewLondon Review
A relatively new addition to the stylish bar chain, The Grand Union Paddington offers a great burger menu, along with a huge array of drinks, at a lovely setting with views of the Paddington Basin.
The Venue
Situated on the ground floor of a business development next to Edgware Road Tube station, this new Grand Union shares many of the traits of its siblings in Camden and Brixton, but because it is in a new building, there is a huge amount of space and openness. Patrons of the existing GU bars will instantly recognize the shabby chic décor - expect mismatched hardwood furniture, vintage pub signs, rugs, chesterfields and big print wallpaper. The open plan set-up offers large tables for big groups in the centre, surrounded by intimate and comfortable booths, perfect for couples and smaller parties. Another huge bonus, particularly for the summer months, is the fantastic outdoor area at the back, looking out onto the redeveloped canal basin. Come the first hint of warmer weather, expect hoards of office workers enjoying some post-work libations.
The Atmosphere
The apparent dichotomy of the Grand Union does seem a little chaotic at first. The atmosphere
created by the vintage decorations and furniture, while in keeping with the chains branding,
seems somewhat anomalous in the glass and steel surroundings. That said, it is by no means an unpleasant place to spend an evening, and after a few drinks, the surroundings will undoubtedly not be a major concern. Indeed, the sheer amount of space available here makes it a great place to enjoy a rousing night, particularly with a large party of friends.
The Food
Again, anyone who has been to any of the other Grand Unions will not be surprised by the menu. You have a simple choice: burger or pizza (or a salad if you must). The burgers are the shining light - some are bigger than your head, and there is an option here for everyone, all the way from a classic cheeseburger, to the more adventurous surf-n-turf through all permutations of blue cheese, chicken, and even pineapple - all priced at around the £10 mark. Also on offer are a good collection of sides and snacks, as well as a few well-chosen desserts, again, all reasonably priced.
The Drink
As you might expect from an established bar chain, there is booze aplenty. On offer are a host of well-mixed cocktails, and rumour has it that if you have a special request, the mixologists will be happy to whip it up for you. This along with many bottled and draught beers, along with a couple of cask ales and a decent wine selection, should provide something for even the most discerning drinker.
The Last Word
Despite its rather unorthodox combo of shabby chic decor in new build surroundings, the Grand Union at Paddington Basin
represents a first-rate watering hole, with a bit of an edge on its local competition. Come here with
friends expecting to have a good time, and you should not be left disappointed.
