The ViewLondon Review
The Greenwich Union is a family-friendly pub that prides itself on good food and micro-brewed beer. The VenueLocated in an attractive road not far from Greenwich Station, The Greenwich Union is a pub that wears its middle-class tweed with pride. Its done out in subtle leather and wood and if you woke from falling asleep, you’d not be scared. You’ll find picturesque cheese shops (well, one) and quaint florists (err, one) nearby. It’s not a place to throw up on yourself. The long, narrow bar extends to a pretty beer garden at the rear.
The AtmosphereBe wary of posh kids during weekend afternoons and posher parents in the evening. The room pulses with polite conversation about theatre or Pilates. The bar staff are friendly enough to dare ask for recommendations from the range of beer offered.
The FoodConsidering that the immediate area, and the fact its houses throb with cash, the prices for food aren’t ridiculously extortionate, but they’re not cheap either. You won’t spy spag bol or lasagna with chips on the menu. Expect slow cocked duck leg or pan-seared baby squid. Might sound a little pretentious for a pub, but the main courses are at the lower end of dear and are mighty yummy. The Sunday roasts are popular with locals and near-locals both.
The DrinkA number of pumps yearn for your attention, ready to splash out their raspberry or helles beer – all brewed on site. They’re pricey, but tasty. And pink beer is just what we Londoners are crying out to drink. Try the chocolate bottled variety too. All draught beers are brewed on site by the Meantime Brewing Company. You can tell too - in a good way.
The Last WordAn ideal place to read the Sunday papers whilst drinking beer and devouring a roast – as long as you’re not broke and don’t mind the presence of children.
