Went to london on a theatre and dinner package and this restaurant was part of the deal, the restaurant was really lovely and so was the food and the service,i couldnt find fault with anything about this place as the moment we entered we were taken to our seats and then the order for drinks and the food was taken very quickly. The hotel was situated right on the square and was very busy especially on a saturday night, but we had no problems at all with food or the staff, would recommend it to anyone thats going on a theatre and dinner package.

I took some colleagues to this place for dinner earlier this week. First off, the Hampshire has just about everything needed to be a really good proposition - location, decor, ambience, reasonable food and prices. However, the staff will be the undoing of the place. On entry, a sultry looking host stayed firmly behind his comptoir, unmoving and unsmiling. On asking if a dinner table for 4 was available (it should have been; the restaurant was 1/3 to 1/2 full) I was asked if I had a reservation (I didn't) and that was the last words he spoke to me. Im rather desultory fashion, the host quickly slammed two tables together and gestured toward it. We waited maybe half and hour for our orders to be taken, and had to repeat them twice each. The wine was OK, as was the food. The steaks had cooled somewhat by the time a waitress had found the steak kinves we'd asked for, and the solitary dessert that was ordered never turned up. After three times asking, the rather tinny background music was turned down to "comfortable". Overall, the Hampshire has the potential to do well and be an enjoyable experience but it will never make a go of it if the staff treat the job with disdainful endurance rather than verve and enthusiasm.

Avoid - like the plague - until things improve.
