The ViewLondon Review
This Cambridge Heath local may be easy to miss but once you check out its live bands and jazz Sundays you won't want to make that mistake again.
The Venue
The Hare is located just around the corner from Cambridge Heath station and has the leafy window boxes and brass lettering of a ubiquitous pub facade. Inside, though, the venue looks far less like a traditional pub and more like someone’s own take on things. Some of its decorative features conform to the norm, like the spongy red carpet and plastic-leather looking sofa benches, but the whitewashed walls are a little vacant in places and the blinds add a certain dinginess to the room. The walls are covered with framed football shirts and even the colours of Tottenham and Arsenal are paired together, crazy as that is.
The Atmosphere
The Hare is a local lair that gets few unfamiliar visitors and it’s a shame because it has the making of a good venue. The pool table is a treat that can only be spotted once inside and round the corner and although the stickness of the leather benches are a nightmare in the summer, during the winter months there is a cosiness to them.
Live music on Friday and Saturday nights is just the usual pub cover bands, but the Hare Jazz night on Sundays is more out of the ordinary and appealing. The staff are friendly and polite and, when asked, they are willing to flick through the Sky Sports repertoire for you.
The Drink
The selection of wine and spirits at the Hare is pedestrian and you shouldn’t expect to find anything other than the usual brands and unremarkable vinos. There is a very good range of beer though, including Becks Vier, Stella, Fosters, Staropramen and Budvar on draught. In terms of cask ales there is Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter and IPA.
The Last Word
The Hare would make for a pleasant Sunday evening if you’re in the area but for the other six days of the week it’s best left to the locals.
