The ViewLondon Review
A relaxed and friendly bar in Tufnell Park, serving up homemade pizzas and basement beats.
The Venue
The Hideaway Bar lives up to its name; nestled in amongst a row a shops, you could easily miss it. Inside, the bar is small and intimate with a mismatched array of tables and chairs. Comfy and inviting sofas fill one corner of the bar and the walls are covered with art created by local artists. Downstairs there is a basement bar, with a more upbeat vibe. The highlight of The Hideaway Bar has to be the beer garden, a large outdoor space covered by a canopy of vines and fairy lights. A bright yellow and red fresco of a central American city covers one wall and there’s a barbecue at the back, making this the perfect location for summer gatherings.
The Atmosphere
Chilled and friendly in the main, it’s down in the basement that things get livelier as the bands and DJs crank up the levels and the party gets in full flow.
The Music
Expect live music encompassing indie, rock and jazz, plus DJs dropping soul, funk, hip-hop and global beats. In the downstairs bar there's a full programme of music and comedy throughout the week, but this space tends to be hired-out for private events at the weekend. Even when it is booked up, the ground floor keeps people happy with DJs until 2am.
The Food
The Hideaway’s homemade pizzas are excellent, with really fresh ingredients on thin and crispy bases. The kitchen makes fresh dough every day and pizzas are served from 6pm-10.30pm. The rustica is particularly good (tomato sauce, mozzarella, garlic, pancetta, baby potatoes, fresh rosemary) £8.50 - the rosemary and garlic combining perfectly with the salty pancetta. The Parma (tomato sauce, mozarella, cherry tomatoes, Parma ham, parmesan shavings, wild rocket, extra virgin olive oil) £8.50, is also good, but could do with more parmesan. If pizzas aren’t your thing, then there is a range of salads including the arrosto (roasted vegetables, baby spinach, goat’s cheese, cherry tomatoes, pine nuts and extra virgin olive oil). Desserts include a warm chocolate brownie (£3.50) and a homemade banoffee pie (£3.50).
The Drink
There’s a selection of world beers on offer including a range of American craft beers: Anchor Steam (£3.90), Sierra Nevada (£3.90), as well as some brewed closer to home: St Peter’s Organic bitter (£4.50). Wines range from £12.50-£15.50. If the beers are a little on the expensive side, The Hideaway makes up for it with a good value cocktail list. The caipi-berry (£7) is a caipirinha muddled with a berry puree, giving a sweet edge to a sour classic. The razzmopolitan (£7.50) - Absolut Raspberri, Cointreau with fresh lime and cranberry - is light and sweet but with a slightly medicinal edge. Happy hour runs everyday from 5pm-7pm, offering £5 cocktails and a bottle of house wine for £10.
The Last Word
It’s a little off-the-beaten-track if you’re not a local, but this is a really good all-rounder. And if the sun is shining, the beer garden is a great place to enjoy a beer and pizza in the sunshine.
