The ViewLondon Review
The Hob looks like a no-frills boozer; you might think it’s only suitable for a swift pint and for watching football. You definitely wouldn’t think it’s an entertainment venue boasting class comedy acts and many a brilliant night. But that it is.
The Venue
A garish, bright blue building directly opposite Forest Hill train station, The Hob cannot be missed. Inside, it’s a hugely spacious pub. And they put the space to good use with a busy roster of comedy and music events.
The Atmosphere
The Hob is a venue of many things. Comedy nights on Mondays feature new artists or the more established trying new stuff, for just £3 entry. More established comics take over on Saturdays when the entry fee rises to £9. In addition to the comedy, The Hob hosts live bands on a Tuesday and a pub quiz hosted by a comic on a Thursday. With screens for sports, a pool table, a newspaper rack and a well-stocked bar, it’s no wonder it’s busy. All of the staff are friendly, selling the place at every given opportunity, but not because they’re quiet and they need to, it seems it’s because they genuinely love their pub.
The Drink
A choice of five lagers and four ales are on offer, all for under four pounds a pint. Most of the spirits are under three pounds for a single, too, and there’s a particular nod to whiskies, among them is a Macallan single malt and Gentleman Jack.
The Last Word
The Hob is a very friendly pub, with great service and a top quality roster of events. The good value prices mean it won’t burn a hole in the pocket, and you’ll be laughing all the way home if you head down for one of their comedy nights.
