I live near the House and have eaten there many times. However over the past 6 months I have had two bad experiences that will mean I will never eat there again.
The first for my mothers birthday (was her favourite restaurant!), service was slow, the food was average at best, very expensive, but it was the staff that caused the problem. On more than one occasion we had to ask for drinks, then very slow at taking our order. When my mum asked what the "Barnsley Chop" was, she was told it was a Pork Chop. Seemed strange when it came with mint sauce and was even stranger when it arrived as a Lamb chop!!
The second occasion, I thought I would give the place the benefit of the doubt having eaten there numerous times, maybe my mothers birthday was an off night.
Unfortunately I found a similar experience, over priced food that was cold. Service that was dreadful and boarding on rude. A cold atmosphere with no one seeming like they were enjoying themselves.
Unfortunately with the number of restaurants in the area, I will not be visiting the House again. Which is a shame as for a number of years the place was an excellent restaurant.
We live very close to The House, and because of this we have eaten there many times. We were very happy to find on a recent visit that they have hired a new chef, and many new staff. The result was a truly fantastic gastro pub meal, and fantastic service.
In the past, as one reviewer says on this website, the food had been sub-par, and the service unfriendly. I am happy to report that The House has turned a corner, and I suggest to anyone who had been put off in the past to try it again. We were very happy we did.
Love this place always without fail a good night, excellent food, helpful pleasant staff, nice pub feel with a superb restaurant. The outside space is great in warm weather and the interior with fires and dark wood lovely and cosy in the winter. It is a welcome world away from the hassles of cramped and loud upper street. Excellent disabled facilities. My family and i even went there for xmas lunch last year and it was worth every penny. A cut above the rest.
Although the atmosphere of this nice little corner gastro pub is pleasant, I would more put this down to the crowd it draws and not from the management. A snooty and grumpy staff is fair enough if you're actually a 5 star establishment. When the service is rubbish and the food almost inedible they should be trying ALOT harder. If a 'gastro-pub' is going to charge upwards of £15 for pub food, it damn well better be good. Burgers with Aldi buns and simply iceberg lettuce for a 'side salad' and solitary portions of luke-warm reheated cottage pie is unacceptable in my opinion.
I will NOT be revisiting 'The House' and would hope that anyone who does steers well clear of the overpriced crappy food.
We visited the house recently, as we have been away travelling for a while and this was one of our fav haunts before.
My friends have given us mixed reviews since we last went. Have to say the decor is still the same-ish, but thats one of the aspects we liked(although could do with a bit of a touch up).
We found the standard to be the same good quality food with pleasant service, we spent £85 for the both of us but that was with a nice bottle of wine and three courses worth every penny, and will be regularly visiting the place as we always had done before, keep it up :)
P.S. Venison tartar amazing!!
This is my fave House in London (even better than my own). Yummy, yummy food and a laidback atmosphere - what more can you want? The House has a pub-like feel to the place but the food is definitely restaurant-quailty.
Beautiful.
