The ViewLondon Review
Minutes away from the Holland Park tube station, and across the street from a police station, you’ll find one of west London’s best gastropubs.
The Venue
Homely, inviting and cosy are the words that spring to mind when thinking of this delightful place. Located on a fairly quiet road near Holland Park, this pub radiates charm. The main bar area is not massive but has lots of seating space with two large tables, a few smaller ones and room to stand. The colours are earthy and warm and the wooden floor gives the place a delightfully rustic feel. Up a set of steps is the restaurant section, which has comfy sofas and a lot of ambiance. The outside seating area is particularly lovely as it’s a stone terrace surrounded with foliage. There is quite a lot of seating in this area as well, but when it gets busy people often spill out onto the street.
The Atmosphere
It is very much a local pub, where residents’ pop in with their dogs after a spot of shopping. However the place is so appealing that it attracts punters from all corners of the city, who want to spend their time in a lovely pub with friendly staff and a mixed clientele. Young professionals, older locals and even some celebrities happily mix here. People gladly share their tables with others and it’s easy to strike up a conversation. The smaller candle lit tables and the restaurant makes for a very romantic setting, perfect for a date.
The Food
With an ever changing menu the one thing that’s constant is the quality of the food. Delightful starters, appealing salads and sumptuous mains are guaranteed. There is always a solid vegetarian choice which includes risottos and tarts and the fish dishes are exceptional - the line-caught roast cod fillet, mash, purple sprouting broccoli and a dried tomato and caper relish puts a gourmet twist on a classic pub staple. Carnivores are well taken care of too, with a tasty chicken salad and truly delicious steak with béarnaise sauce. A decadent banana, pecan and brown sugar meringue sundae represents the perfect end to your meal.
The Drink
There are many attractive choices for ale drinkers, giving the pub a deserved good reputation for all things cask. The wine list is exceptional, both in choice and quality, not only for a pub but for any establishment with wines by the bottle or glass. Choose a glass of Begerac Malbec Merlot (£4.10 a glass) out of the reds, a Cotes du Provance, Tamary Elegance (£4.40 a glass) if you fancy a fabulous rose, or the Sauvignon Blanc Framingham (£4.60 small), for a wonderful white. The spirits do not disappoint either with fine single malts and liquors to opt for.
The Last Word
If a relaxed local pub with delectable food, a good choice of drinks and a great atmosphere is your thing, then you’ll love the Ladbroke Arms.
