The ViewLondon Review
This hip Old Street bar has an assorted spectrum that runs from table dancing hedonism on some nights, to becoming the perfect place for a quiet pint with friends on others. The VenueThe fact that The Legion is located in deepest Old Street amongst untold numbers of other pubs and bars, yet still remains a must to visit, is testament to its quality. It’s spacious without being cavernous, and understated whilst remaining interesting. People pour into the funnel shaped bar and migrate towards the back and its spacious dance floor. Not that this is the designated dance zone. Although it’s not the biggest of bars people tend to be the type who find space to party. With a cold stone floor layering this bar, it could have felt a little bleak, but the heavy wooden presence throughout leaves it feeling homely and welcoming like a downtown log cabin.
he AtmosphereThis bar is worth travelling to and when you reach it a sense of fulfilment abounds. It’s not just a bar that you visit before a club; it’s a destination that you can savour for an entire night. The atmosphere you encounter in The Legion can change with every visit, and it is this positive that keeps the bar perennially fresh. On the down side, the bar staff can be a little truculent. The bouncers though are friendly and helpful. There is no fixed clientele, The Legion attracts an army of assorted characters, with the simple goal of enjoying a right old knees up.
The MusicA range of music is played from the DJ booth to cater to the constant variation in the clientele. This non-specific policy in no way detracts from the music’s importance. The journey of genres, from funk to punk or breaks to house, is a great way to lure in the drinkers and keep them interested all night.
The DrinkThe Legion offers an excellent choice of alcoholic beverages. Quality beers stream on draught and the vast array of spirits are stacked high from floor to ceiling. It’s not a cocktail bar. Customers are there to drink in the atmosphere rather than the specialist drinks that some places rely so heavily upon. It would be a crime not to mention the long bar that stretches along the left hand wall; the ability to serve you immediately is an underrated quality.
The Final WordWith so many bars and clubs in London it’s easy to stumble on mediocrity on a regular basis. The Legion is a quick way to avoid this. It puts a smile on your face like a warm cup of coco and sends you home feeling warm and reassured that average certainly doesn’t reign in Old Street.
