The ViewLondon Review
More a pub for the locals, The Lillie Langtry is not the sort of place you’d want to go to on a night out unless you’re in the area and really stuck for ideas.
The Venue
Renaming the venue from The Cricketers hasn’t done much for it, especially since both names adorn the signs outside - more confusing than productive.
Situated on the ground floor of a council tenement building doesn’t make it the most welcoming of venues - The Lillie Langtry looks oppressive from the outside and the feeling is carried inside as all eyes turn to look at you as you walk through the door. The decor is shabby and dated with yellow and cream walls and worn carpets. Furniture consists of hard wooden tables and chairs with a few (permanently occupied) stools aligning the bar. There’s a pool table, jukebox and games machines plus screens to watch sporting fixtures.
The Atmosphere
Lively and yet strangely still, don’t be surprised if the entire venue silences upon entrance, like some country pub in a scary movie – not the most friendly of welcomes. The clientele at consists of locals, probably from the surrounding tower blocks, of all ages.
The Drink
A typical British pub, the drink selection at The Lillie Langtry is made up of pub favourites such as Fosters, Carlsberg, Strongbow, Guinness and John Smiths on tap, with all the regular spirits behind the bar. There are a couple of tankards on display, which suggests it’s a favourable venue for regulars.
The Last Word
More Kilburn than St Johns Wood, The Lillie Langtry is definitely the other side of the bridge. If you live in the area you’ll probably love the fact that it’s a real locals pub, if not you’re better off going somewhere else.
