The ViewLondon Review
A cavernous delight hidden in the midst of the Isle of Dogs, The Lord Nelson is a little East End gem.
The Venue
The Lord Nelson looks like a relatively ordinary Isle of Dogs boozer, with the Free Wi-Fi advertised on the door the only indication of modernity. The interior, however, proves this is a stylish, sophisticated gastropub that wouldn’t look out of place in more affluent parts of London.
Large leather sofas sit nearby a classic dining area, with all the seating generously accompanied by a host of books, newspapers, retro lamps, and the free wi-fi. A pool table separates the pleasant dining area from a large beer garden that’s complete with heaters, awnings and long benches.
The Atmosphere
Boasting many of the characters that inhabit the Isle of Dogs, The Lord Nelson sees old men shouting across the bar on lazy afternoons, busy Friday nights full of locals, and heaving Sundays where the extremely popular roast dinners entice visitors in their droves. You might even see groups of tracksuits as the Docklands Sports and Social Club convene to discuss matters, or get stuck in the middle of the immensely popular - and quite rowdy - quiz night.
The Food
A good selection of quick lunches, including huge fish finger baguettes and pastas, are okay and prove perfect for the few local workers that pop in for a quick bite. The more impressive dinner menu is considerably better and worth a try. Of particular note is a deliciously authentic Thai red curry, as well as an awesome Nelson’s steak – a gorgeous rib-eye steak with the works. Those in the know, however, will head to the pub on a Sunday and gorge on the impressive roast.
The Drink
A good selection of beers are available - all kept quite well - including a lively and apt Bombardier. Wines from the tap take something away from the experience but for convenience and price the choices aren’t too bad.
The coffee is really disappointing, however, with the choice of cheap supermarket own granules being awful and unhidden.
The Last Word
Serving the local community superbly, The Lord Nelson brings a bit of sophistication to the Isle of Dogs. Nelson would be proud.
