The ViewLondon Review
If you ever get lost in Camden and find yourself going up the Camden Road, then you might stumble across this fab little gastropub. The VenueAdjacent to a church, stepping into The Lord Stanley feels like you’ve stepped into a ghetto. Looking at it first hand, this pub doesn’t look that great, but when you get over the not so appealing aesthetics it’s actually quite charming.
Inside, the smell of the delicious food hits you as you push through the door. The old wooden features that comprises the pub suits its occupants and the general demeanor of the place. Instead of food menus, there is a very large blackboard displaying what they have on offer. On top of the bar is a wicker basket stuffed with different varieties of bread that you can have with your meal. The large selection on offer is just a small insight into how foodie this place is.
The AtmosphereThe Lord Stanley is packed full of locals who know that this pub doesn’t tend to get too busy and come in big groups to sit around the large wooden tables, tucking into homely and scrumptious food. There’s no music but you don’t come here for that, it is simply a gastropub with its emphasis on the food. The servers check to see if you want more drinks so there's no need to go to the bar as it’ll be done for you, and they do it with real class.
At lunch, it is completely full of people taking their time over their meals and appreciating the ambience and calmness that is apparent within this quaint pub.
The FoodYou’re in for a treat at The Lord Stanley. The menu is bursting full of different flavours. For starters, you can be good by having a root vegetable soup (£4.50) or, if you fancy a bit more, the half dozen rock oysters for £7 are a good choice. Mains are as fantastic as the starters. The salmon fillet steak with new potatoes, French beans and baby spinach (£12.50) is filling and satisfying, whereas the sirloin steak with real chips, watercress and pepper sauce (£16) is meaty and worth the money. The poached pears with cream and caramelised walnut, or the chocolate fondant with creame anglaise (£4) are very good options for your pudding.
Not feeling that peckish? Then the light bites menu might suit you. Served from 12pm-3pm and 6pm-7.30pm, it includes dishes like a simple linguini with rocket, pesto and parmesan, or a chicken and avocado sandwich.
The DrinkThe wines are of a very high standard here and match the food well. For the whites, you can have the house La Lesc Vin de Pays Gers 2006 for a very reasonable £12.95 a bottle, £3.30 for 125ml or £4.50 for a 250ml glass. Another wine to try is the Casa Azul Sauvignon Blanc 2007 for £14.50 a bottle, £3.70 a small glass or £4.90 for a large.
The reds are particularly good - especially the Navajas Rioja 2006. It’s rich, full and a great accompaniment to the steak at just £17 a bottle, £4.45 for a small glass or £5.30 for a large glass. The house Merlot 2006 at £12.95 a bottle is also a good choice.
The beers are just the norm, however, including IPA, Adnams Broadside, Carlsberg and the increasingly popular Addlestones, starting at just £2.80 a pint.
The Last WordThe Lord Stanley is a cute little pub tucked away from the craziness of Camden. With great food and company it’s recommended you potter along and try something a bit different for your dinner.
