Nicely hidden from the worst of the braying city types the Magpie seems to attract a nice crowd, most of whom are drinking real ale. There are ten ales on the bar when We visit and we try 5 that we have not seen before. All are excellent as is the knowledge of the bartender who is happy to give tasters and tell us what hops are used in the brew. We didn't eat but the menu looked appealing and quite reasonable for a bar in this area and the burger and pie on the table next to us looked great. There doesn't appear to be any music which meets with our approval and would seem superfluous against the sound of chatter. The landlord seems a gregarious type and a bit of a comedian according to the regulars we chat to at the bar. I would recommend the magpie highly and if you get the chance try the Otley Thai bo and the Barista Espresso stout, sensational flavours from opposite ends of the taste spectrum. Be aware that they change the beers everyday so get there soon.

The Magpie is a typical city pub and it is full of suits however the beer is excellent, especially the 'Landlord'. You can drink outside on the street next to the city police Skoda estate cars and watch the office totty go by as well. The Magpie is a good alternative to the Railway Tavern and Hamilton Hall.
