The ViewLondon Review
The Marquess of Anglesey in busy Covent Garden is neither hidden nor a gem, but after an elegant makeover this once typical pub has turned an important corner. The VenueStood in the shadow of the Royal Opera House, The Marquess of Anglesey has a gastro pub feel but without the flat-pack look. The main bar and upstairs dining room exude a decadent splendor with potted palm trees, sassy wallpaper and original dark wooden floors. A choice of tables with natty looking chairs complete the look.
The AtmosphereWith a mix of business people, theatre goers and tourists, the atmosphere in The Marquess of Anglesey is far from supercharged. On occasions, discreetly placed TV screens are switched on to keep sports fans happy, but otherwise the bar fills with a low level of buzzy chatter. The staff are helpful and obliging.
The DrinkThe Marquess of Anglesey boasts a good selection of well kept ales, fine wines and lagers. Prices aren't worth crying over here, but if you're feeling flush then go for one of the classic cocktails listed on the chalkboard.
FoodA staircase winds its way up to the first floor and into a smart dining room with original sash windows that look out onto the street. Well prepared favourites such as homemade fishcakes and sausage and mash taste fresh and are fairly priced. The pasta is particularly noteworthy.
The Last WordThe Marquess of Anglesey is a safe bet for a quick drink after work, or a good value pre-theatre meal.
