The ViewLondon Review
One of three bars located inside the Strand Palace Hotel, Mask Bar provides a calm place to unwind amongst the hustle and bustle of The Strand.
The Venue
Split over a ground and mezzanine floor, Mask Bar is spacious and has ample seating for hotel residents or those popping in for a well-earned drink. The decor is simple, understated and modern; the most outlandish artefacts are two large
comedy-tragedy masks hanging on the wall, no doubt a nod to the surrounding theatres. Burnt orange and deep browns make up the stylish colour scheme, and these hues are highlighted by illuminated brass flowers and spotlights. The mirrored bar,
situated directly in front of the entrance, temptingly displays a large pail containing bottles of Tattinger, which incidentally dominates the Champagne list.
The Atmosphere
The soft lighting and comfortable sofas induce a calm and inviting feel within the bar, whilst the quiet music in the background can hardly be heard over the gentle chatter of groups of friends and colleagues. The polite staff cheerfully greet guests as they
enter and provide a welcoming and friendly service. The relaxed ambience of the bar almost seduces you into booking a room at the hotel, so you can stagger upstairs to bed at the end of the night.
The Drink
After a long day in the city, what better way to unravel than with a drink or two? You certainly won’t be short of choices here, with plenty of options from bottled beers at £4.50 to flavoured Champagne cocktails which come in at £9.95 a glass and are
dangerously drinkable. Cocktails are particularly prominent – there are around a dozen classics available for £8.95 and the same amount on a list described as Mask Bar specials (£9.95).
If you’re into whiskey then you’ll appreciate the eleven varieties served, ranging from a Jameson’s at £6.60 to the 16-year-old Lagavulin single malt coming in at £12 for a 50ml measure. The wine selection is also respectable, starting out at £16.50 a bottle
and going up to just under £30, taking in tried and trusted varieties like Chardonnay and Sancerre. If you’re in the mood to splash the cash then the Champagne list offers six different types of Tattinger costing between £54 and £186 a bottle.
The Last Word
The Mask Bar is by no means a hot spot for a night on the town, but if you find yourself staying at the Strand Palace Hotel or you're in need of a quieter drink than that available at the pubs nearby, it provides a relaxing place to wind down after a
hard day’s work or a gruelling shopping trip.
