The ViewLondon Review
Traditional pub The Mitre has reinvented itself, serving up contemporary gastropub food and an exceptional wine list in a warm venue with a buzzing atmosphere. The VenueThe Mitre is located on Holland Park Avenue, on the corner of Ladbroke Grove, close to Holland Park and Notting Hill Gate tubes. The large, uninspiring building opens up to a downstairs bar and upstairs dining room, with the bar offering squashy sofas and the dining room a slightly more formal, elegant environment. During the summer, there are a few outdoor tables, which are always in great demand in fine weather.
The AtmosphereHolland Park and Notting Hill locals are the mainstay of the clientele, despite its transformation in recent years. This is a good place to relax, either on comfy sofas downstairs, or over a leisurely meal in the dining room, but don’t come here for a quick bite to eat. The waitresses usually serve a lot of tables at the same time, and while they are friendly, they are not the fastest or most efficient and you should be prepared to chill out over a glass of wine while you wait for your food.
The FoodThe Mitre offers a twist on typical British favourites like rib eye steak, as well as Modern European gastropub fare. The prices are around £10-£15 for a main course, though they do offer a two course set lunch on weekdays. The food is the focus with few customers coming in just for a drink.
The DrinkThe wine list at The Mitre stands out for its attention to detail and interesting choices. The house wine is reasonable at £12, but expect for pay over £20 for a bottle of Rioja and it’s very expensive to buy wine by the glass. They offer real ales and draught lagers also.
The Last WordThe Mitre is always busy and the service is slow, but they offer great modern food and an outstanding choice of wines from around the world. Overall, it's a decent place to relax in if you’re in the area.
