The ViewLondon Review
Quaint, cute and quintessentially English. Richmond has more than its fair share of wonderfully traditional boozers and yet The Mitre still stands out.
The Venue
The Mitre cuts a very impressive figure on a quiet residential street in Richmond. The large, corner-positioned building is painted a pretty muted yellow colour and has retained many of its key period-features. Inside, the space is smaller than many venues owned by the Young’s brewery but this is expanded upon considerably in warmer weather thanks to three outdoor areas, including a well-kept patio beer garden out the back. That said, the main bar is opened up thanks to some cleverly positioned ornate mirrors and a light cream colour scheme, enlivened by pretty pictures on the wall and a stained glass window. It’s the kind of place you can settle into for an entire afternoon before realising that, at some point, it got dark outside.
The Atmosphere
The Mitre is a proper pub for locals and is positioned far enough away from the main strip that it doesn’t get inundated by the crowds that flock here at the weekend – particularly in the summer months. That said, the welcome is warm even if you’re not a regular face and the banter feels very genuine. Occasionally they host live music events and a nice touch is their weekly open mic night, which takes place each Wednesday.
The Drink
Being a Young’s pub, there is a focus on real ale at the bar, albeit with a skew towards Young’s cask ales. The pub is Cask Marque accredited and they clearly keep their beers very well. Young’s Bitter, Special and Bombardier all make a regular appearance but they do bolster this with a rotating guest ale that usually comes from the highly regarded Twickenham Fine Ales.
The Last Word
The Mitre is the kind of laid back boozer that you wish you had at the end of your road on a Sunday afternoon. If you’re in the area and want to lazily while away the day then make a point of checking it out for yourself.
