I have been out of the area for a while but i was delighted to be recognised when i returned to The Mitre over the weekend. So much so that i visted three days in a row!
I went in for drinks on Friday night and had a great night. The bar was busy and the atmosphere was really friendly.
We popped in again on Saturday on our way elsewhere. But it was Sunday that really did it for me. I had forgotten how simply marvellous their roasts are!
Again, it was very busy but service was friendly and attentive. The place was rammed but we didn't have to wait long at all for our food to arrive.
You will struggle to find a better roast. The plate is piled high with perfectly cooked veg, good quality meat and the biggest Yorkshire puddings you will see! And the gravy is deep and rich and just bloody great
If i had one complaint it would be that after the main course trying to fit a dessert in is not an easy task!
I just about managed it.
I have to go away again now but i am already looking forward to my next visit!
Unfortunately this pub has gone from one of my favourite locals to some where that I will not visit again. My partner and I went for dinner on Saturday evening and experienced extremely bad service from start to finish, the wait staff took their time taking our order and bringing our food. We had to ask for a bucket for the wine. Our request for sauce was meet with the sauce being nearly thrown on the table.
At no point were we asked how the food was even after having to return a half cooked meal to the kitchen, which was replaced with an over-cooked meal, and when I say over-cooked I mean burnt.
When we had finished our meal the wait staff who was not able to speak English made hand gestures over our empty plates to see if we had finished. The bill took ages to come and in the end I had to interrupt the staff gossip session to ask for it.
When we spoke to the manager about the service and the meal, the manager acknowledged that he knew a meal had been returned to the kitchen, which begs the question why didn't he come and check that everything was ok. He apologised for the service but unfortunately the damage is done and I would not recommend this once great pub to others.
The Mitre would get a firm five stars were it not for the service, which can be hit-and-miss, depending on who serves you. You may be delighted, or met with a surly, smile-free experience. As regulars, we have experienced both and it does make you wonder if the management have not realised how easily one bad apple can sully an experience. Most recently our card transaction was completed with our card being passed back to us, a flick of a ponytail and not even a thanks. Very odd. It wasn't busy and we had certainly tipped. On the plus side, and it's a big one, the Menu is outstandingly good. Proper, unpretentious British food done extremely well with good local sourcing of meats and fish where relevant. Portions are on the generous side and come from a proper kitchen where you can see everything is prepared from scratch. There is also a pretty good selection of wines by the glass. I'm not sure I would recommend having breakfast here - we waited half an hour for our coffees the time we tried, food came when we had long finished our coffees! But for lunch and dinner its a great find. Interior is nice too; comfortable seats and dark enough to feel intimate even if it's quite buzzy (noisy) most of the time. Hats off to the chefs though - keep doing what you do.
Went for a sunday roast. was absolutely brilliant.
Food was cooked to perfection and was actually home made unlike many pubs claim to be.
Staff were friendly and polite, didnt have to wait long at all considering it was completely packed. A bit pricey but worth every penny.
Went to The Mitre on a Monday evening for dinner with a small group, food was very nice however the service was terrible we had to ask for many things we had ordered twice as they didn't come/were forgotten and it took forever to bring the bill at the end. Enjoyed the food and the atmosphere however would not return due to slow service.
Are you kidding me Rommy? This place is the most kid friendly place i've seen in the area ... not that i necessarily want loads of kids running around when i'm having my Sunday lunch!
Love this place. Great food, great music, great atmosphere. The staff are all very friendly and charming and the 'garden' at the front is awesome when the sun shines.
Can't fault it.
Actually yes i can. £4 for a pint of lager?! I guess that's where we're heading though.
We went along after being told this pub was children friendly. Instead, our entire party of 10 felt like we were treated very rudely by the staff and we were also advised that our children were annoying the other customers despite there only being 5 other people there and our children being very well behaved. Food was so so but service awful with four of us getting the wrong orders and one of our group not eating until we had all finished. Dont go there.
