The ViewLondon Review
As New Cross becomes increasingly popular for its alternative crowd, it’s good to see that some old favourites like the Montague Arms haven’t lost their character.
The Venue
Located on the junction of New Cross and Peckham, this cheap and cheerful hangout provides a unique setting for a pint and bit of entertainment. Cluttered with bizarre pirate ship memorabilia such as a flag on the ceiling, ship wheels and skulls, as well as stuffed animals and a carriage containing board games, The Montague Arms is a great retreat that, for those with an imagination, will feel like you’re stepping into an old fashioned story book. With a small dancefloor and stage area at one end and tables throughout, this venue is perfectly eclectic whatever the occasion.
The Atmosphere
Adding to the authentic antique decor are the staff; friendly and welcoming bar tenders with an average age of about 65 serve your every need with a smile, which makes a pleasant change from other pubs in the area. As it attracts interest with live band nights and other entertainment such as bellydancing, the nearby Goldsmiths students are in their element in this quietly popular boozer, as well as being a regular spot for locals to glug down a refreshing pint in cosy comfort.
The Food
A favourite for locals at the Montague Arms is the Sunday Roast served from 12-5pm, with good portions at very fair prices.
The Drink
The drink at The Montague Arms are reasonably priced with pints at around £3, and it's the same for vodka and a mixer They also do cheap cider and huge glasses of cheap but tasty wine. They also offer various bitters such as Samuel Smith, Old Speckled Hen, Black Sheep and London Pride.
The Last Word
Whether it’s to see the latest band to come out of New Cross for under a fiver or to eat a roast whilst playing a tatty board game in a slightly eccentric, surreal yet warm atmosphere, The Montague Arms is a rare and enjoyable haven that shouldn’t be missed.
