Went there last week and I'm afraid I can't agree with the previous posts, I believe there under new management and after not being there for a while it was a pleasant surprise, it seems to be working. The food is really good and the menu seems to change regularly. Friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. Lovely
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous bad reviews. I went there a couple of months ago with some friends, hoping to treat them to a nice sunday roast. But I was wrong! The place looks nice but the furniture is something of a hazard! (My chair was broken and I cut myself trying to move it closer to the table!). The pub was empty on that sunday at about 1 pm and even though we were the only customers, the grumpy waiter took ages to take our order and then serve us. I guess my friend's choice of only side dishes (he wasn't particularly fond of the roasts and it's a pity you don't have the regular menu also available on sundays) didn't help to improve the waiter's surly mood. The meat wasn't bad, I must admit, but too chunky and difficult to cut. It was quite pricey too. I'm afraid the pub is now resting on its laurels, relying on its reputation that was once true and probably earned but sadly no longer accurate.
We went for dinner on Tuesday night and the place was full on a nice warm evening.
Once seated in the eating area we had to call the waiter over to even place an order, table service is non existent.
We ordered a sharing platter of hummus and bread and olives which took 40 mins to be served. This should have been a sign of what was to come. We then waited another hour and a half to get our mains and by the time it arrived the veg was cold and the meat was warm. When we sent our food back, it was returned with the veg warmed and the meat cold. The potatoes were microwaved so much that it was completely dehydrated I couldn't cut through it with a knife.
You could just over look this as a one off but even the flavours were bland and didn't work (duck with a creamy cabbage)
There is nothing I would recommend about this experience. We sent one dish back untouched and the other was only half eaten because we were staving. This food costs £17 for a mains. Even if it was cooked well I have to say the flavours were terrible.
When you pay this much for a mains you expect good quality and good service and you dont get this here
Shock Horror! Carrots are the best thing in the roast! I have had a few Sunday Roasts at the Morgan Arms in 2008, and although expensive they have always been exquisite to taste and generous in serving. On Sunday's, the place has always been extremely busy at both lunchtimes and evenings and you generally have to book ahead. As we lay in bed on Sunday morning in May 2010, thinking about where to go for a roast, the choice was obvious. The Morgan Arms. However, that's where the good news ended. On arrival at the Morgan, the place was empty with only a couple of people in there. We arrived at 1pm. It proudly displayed it's Timeout good food guide 2010 so everything seemed ok. I noticed an unfinished roast on a customer's table and just thought to myself that he must be full or ill. I ordered the lamb leg roast for £15 and my girlfriend the rack of beef for £13. Mine arrived and it looked raw. The lamb was fatty and was more chump than champ. I immediately sent it back to be cooked. I am an avid meat eater and rarely ever send my food back. I'm also colour blind but even I could tell that was too pink for my liking. My girlfriend's beef was red and bloody and would have put any serious meat eater off. We took photos of the food hoping to upload someday. I left most of my food as did my girlfriend. The roast potatoes were frozen and undercooked, (the old Morgan would only use fresh produce), the yorkshire puddings were frozen not fresh and the best thing on the plate were the carrots which obviously were boiled not roasted. What annoys me is the price for rubbish food. £30 for two inedible roasts. All I can imagine is that the place has come under new ownership. Any review from 2008 is valid as I used to go to The Morgan Arms, however, do not trust The Morgan Arms now. It's awful. As for the Timeout award, well you decide how that mistake happened.!
This used to be my favourite bar in the east end, I also used to enjoy the food. However, bar food quality has been going downhill and the services is appalling. The last two visits, both times we had our food delivered late and cold. The last time the waitress delivered the food the the wrong table. When we spotted it eventually after 35 min of "its arriving soon", she just took the now very cold plate and put it in front of us! When we said we wont accept it, we spoke to the manager who was extremely rude and hysterical blond east-ender. When we asked her to calm down she accused us of being rude to the waitress and her! She then went on and screamed at the table that took our plate and then, in front of us, bad mouthed us. This venue has been popular with the yuppies and one can see why; lovely refurbished victorian building, comfy sofas, good selection of drinks, outside sitting, and until recently very good food. However, the bar staff and its manager spoil everything, and unless they are changed, I wont go near it again. AVOID!
I was quite surprised to see so many good reviews for The Morgan Arms after my visit there today. It's a lovely looking pub from both the inside and out but the service doesn't match up. The Morgan Arms seems to appeal/cater to middle-class folk. We ordered food and sat down with our drinks never expecting the food to be longer than 20 minutes, after all we only ordered a standard fish and chips. Nearly an hour later we were still waiting for our food and at no point did the waiter/waitress speak to us, they seemed to be more interested in tending to the every need of the table of middle-class people behind us, who were even shouting drink orders as their food was being served and asking for cutlery. Now every other pub in the East End would have you get up and get the cutlery from the side yourself and have you order your drink at the bar! They were not told to do either and I suspect this held up our food even longer.
When we asked the waitress how long our food would be she said it wouldn't have been so long if it hadn't been for something the table behind had ordered, quite shocking. Still gave no indication of how long. In the end we gave up waiting and asked for our money back from the waitress who seem to nearly die of shock when we told her how long we had spent waiting for the food. Apparently she had been doing some paperwork downstairs. What this had to do with us I don't know! Bring back proper East End service, people who know how to run a pub not this poor attempt at running a pub. Also the prices are worth looking over as they are a tab too expensive but I suppose that keeps us ordinary folks out! This is one place I won't be visiting again.
Went to the Morgan this week. The pub had a good lively atmosphere for a weekday evening and was full but not crowded. The music was a bit loud at times to have a conversation, but that's not unusual for a pub. We had the Lamb Shanks and to be honest the food was not particularly impressive for the price. The meat was a bit tough, the barley risotto needed salt and the overall meal was very forgettable. I think I would come back for a pint with friends but I would not use the restaurant.
Service was a little surly and had to ask for butter for our bread. My friend is a meat eater and rated her beef course highly but the only veggie option was honestly vile (a mushroom risotto that bizarrely tasted nothing like mushrooms but rather burnt macaroni cheese!). I guess the mesage is - don't eat here if you're veggie! I won't be going back. Oh, and house champagne is also atrocious. I'd advise upgrading.
The Morgan Arms is a lovely pub in a good location for Bow/Mile End residents. It ticks all the boxes for attractive decor, friendly staff, good food and a decent wine list.
However there are a couple of things that let it down - firstly it's always a bit cold, no matter where you sit there's a draft, which is a shame, particularly in winter when you want to hibernate in a cosy pub. It would also be good to have some more sofas and informal seating to add to the cosiness factor, after all you'd be more inclined to linger if this was improved.
Also when I've eaten there the food has always been on the cold side, I realised why when we sat on a table by the kitchen hatch the other day - my lovely steak sandwich was sitting on the side for ten minutes before the waiter came and picked it up (I didn't realise it was mine otherwise I would've said something!).
However despite this I do thoroughly recommend The Morgan for those in the area, it's the nicest pub around these parts.
I love The Morgan Arms because it feels like you're in the know. Not that many people know The Morgan Arms does good food and drink so if you do discover it, keep it to yourself.
