The ViewLondon Review
With a great location close to bustling Borough Market, The Mudlark offers an extensive range of draught lager and ale for the beer connoisseur and a decent food menu for hungry lunchtime punters. A decent, well priced find in Southwark.
The Venue
Situated a stone’s throw away from Southwark Cathedral, adjacent to the River Thames, The Mudlark is in a great position. With barges slowly meandering along our capital city’s river there are great views to enjoy on a beautiful summer’s day. With a pleasant outside area - a novelty itself in Central London - there are plenty of tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the summer sun.
The interior is attractive with large, airy windows, wooden beams and pretty Tiffany-style lighting that help to create a nice ambience. Plasma screens are also available for sporting events. The upstairs restaurant, which is decorated in the same style as downstairs, has comfortable leather chairs and a settee inviting you to sit down and enjoy your meal.
The Atmosphere
Close to bustling Borough Market and several local attractions, there is no shortage of customers at The Mudlark - mainly tourists and local office workers. Some of the staff aren’t overly friendly, although if you’re not of a sensitive disposition it shouldn’t put you off what is essentially a pleasant pub.
The Food
The Mudlark offers unpretentious pub grub with breakfast available until noon. Sandwiches for the lunchtime rush cost from £4.50 for an old favourite – the fish finger sandwich. There are plenty of vegetarian options available throughout the menu but if you are a true carnivore you may fancy an Aberdeen Angus burger that is priced from £6.50. Thirteen varieties of sausages are available, including roasted carrot, parsnip, onion and herb, priced at £6.95.
From the dinner menu, starters range from £3.50. Tom yum prawns and BBQ chicken fillets are some of the choices. Mains cost from £6.95 for a roasted mushroom risotto or £8.95 for a duck leg comfit with red currant jus. To garnish these dishes there is a range of award winning chutneys either to sample with your meal or to take home for £3.50. Cider and horseradish mustard or Suffolk real ale chutney are the popular choices. If you still have room, a range of puddings cost from £2.65 for a vanilla pod ice cream.
The Drink
The Mudlark has a great range of beer on offer, including Stella, Amstel, Kronenbourg, Fos, Heineken, Guinness, London Pride, Bee Zone, Wainwright and Tim Taylor on draught. There are 11 ales in total, making this a great find for lovers of the dark stuff. Corona, Becks, Bud, Leffe, and Bulmers are also on sale in bottles.
All wine is available by the glass starting from £2.65 for an Australian Chardonnay. A bottle of Spy Valley Reisling (NZ) or a red Castello di Fabbrica is £16.50. Rose starts at £2.80 for an Italian Merlot, which is very reasonable for the area. For those who like a bit of sparkle, a bottle of Pinot Grigio Sparkling is 12.95 or, for the real thing, Laurent Perrier Rose is £55.
The Last Word
The Mudlark is an attractive pub with a spacious outside area, separate dining room and really well priced drinks.
