The ViewLondon Review
A traditional boozer that provides locals with a quiet place to drink away from the main party action in Camden.
The Venue
The Old Eagle is hidden away comfortably between Camden Town and Kentish Town, with Camden Town tube about an eight minute walk away. You can enter the pub via two doors, one to the rear and one at the front. The long wooden bar takes up most of the left side as you enter through the front and you can choose to perch by its side on a high chair or at the candlelit tables opposite. A large squishy, old leather couch sits at the far end and is undoubtedly the comfiest seat in the house. Around the corners of the bar there are cosy booths and more tables and chairs, which lead to a conservatory and an unusually large stain glass window.
Elements of the décor are something for the eye to behold: big instruments, such as guitars, organs and drums hang from the ceiling. Famous quotes are written on a blackboard above the bar, and old-fashioned lampshades provide low lighting.
The Atmosphere
This venue is perfect for a quiet drink during the week as the atmosphere is somewhat low-key. It probably gets busier at weekends, but not so much so that you can’t get to the bar or are hard done by for a seat. With no other pubs around it, most of the clientele are locals who have been coming for years, propping up the bar talking to the young and friendly staff.
The Drink
A large selection of beer, wines and spirits are on offer. A large glass of pinot grigio is about £5 and a pint is £3-£4. Guinness, Fosters, Kronenbourg and Peroni are available on draught. Selected house doubles are just £2.50.
The Last Word
A nice old-fashioned pub that is perfect for a relaxing start to the night, or a cosy daytime drink. But if it's excitement you seek, venture into the heart of nearby Camden for a livelier time.
