The ViewLondon Review
The Old Globe is a little bit like the embarrassing dad that wears fashions totally inappropriate for his age.
The Venue
The last building at the end of Globe Road, the pub finds itself adjoining the busy Mile End Road. Its facade is welcoming enough but the idea of tables and chairs on the pavement outside isn’t embraced due to the noise and pollution of the location.
Within the long, narrow building you’ll find an attempt at a hip decor. Inflated daisy prints stain the pale blue background walls, red leather armchairs grace quiet corners and the wooden look is continuous throughout. If you’re feeling positive you might say that the prints are individual and bright, adding a little bloom to the pub, but if not then this area of the decor will hurt you like a flunking fad.
Other than that, the Old Globe is fairly simple and the presence of a pool table keeps the roots of its look firmly entrenched in tradition.
The Atmosphere
Given its location, the Old Globe is bound to attract the locals from its residential constituents. Apart from this crowd there are plenty of students who make the trip to the pub for the use of the pool table and big screens (although there are no Sky Sports matches screened here). There’s a tiny DJ booth to the left of the entrance.
The Drink
Among the beer on tap there are a couple of good choices including Carlsberg, Fosters, Red Stripe and Kronenbourg. As for wine, it is available by the bottle or the glass at low prices.
The Last Word
The Old Globe is a pleasant place for its locals and somewhere for students to escape to when they’re tired of the overrun hotspots of Mile End Road, but for everyone else there isn’t much to warrant a fanfare.
