This pub is closed for all February 2011 for refurbishment following a change of ownership. We hold our breath hoping it remains as charming and friendly as before. Watch this space and do post if you visit in March 2011 onwards

We checked on Monday 28 March 2011 and it looked far from finished and no signs regarding an opening date!
I will put a note here as soon as I am sure it has opened again or there is a certain date for that. I live nearby!

OK just walked past and there is a sign saying it will be open for business on Wednesday 6th April 2011. I will post again sometime after that date to tell you what it is like unless others report back first.
The whole building has been 'made-over', so it will be interesting to see if there will be more floors used for the pub re eating. Also whether live jazz will return.

Well it is now open again and I will not be using it. It has lost all its charm. Just another 'metro' pub.
However others might like it but as of now it has no stars at all.
Why do new owners always throw everything out to impose their own 'Dwell' vision. The ORC was a great little city pub with fabulous character, great Jazz on alternate Wednesdays and not bad grub. Ho hum where now I wonder

Booked this place a small engagement drinks last week - great, it is definitely recommended, and everyone who attended for the first time said the same.

The place is small and has great decor on both floors - drinks selection is very good. The free jukebox is fun. I think the most important mention goes to the staff: very friendly and hard working, and for our small party made us feel very welcome.

I have also been here for a few business meetings/lunch. Hope to go again soon.

Just got back from lunch at Ye Olde Red Cow. What a difference! Before it was a pub I would avoid. Now, it looks inviting, serves really good food that's not too expensive, seems to have a good selection of beer and - the best bit - has a really nice pubby atmosphere unlike so many pubs in the immediate vicinity! I'm almost loathe to recommend it as it's quite small and not that busy - yet! Definitely worth a look.

AT LAST! A london pub that doesnt want to be a gastro/wine/funky place there are too many of these 2 bobs places about.
Great vibe, lovely owners and a great location next to Smithfields market. The food is very good and although ive heard the soace is small I prefer intimate atmospheres./

I know this has just been taken over and re-opened and about time too. check it out.

The Old Red Cow has reopened! I had been looking forward to seeing what it was like inside after seeing funky light fittings through the window. I wasn't disappointed. The decor is amazing and the choice of beers is the best I have seen in the area. My boyfriend and I had the beer battered fish n chips and it was delicious! I shall definitely be returning...especially as they do sunday roasts and nowhere does them round barbican way! Excellent new pub :)

Ye Old Red Cow is an excellent Shepherd Neame pub tucked away near Smithfields Market and Barts. The bar staff were very good. It's usually quieter in the evening so there's no long queue for the next pint of liquid Kent gold. Ye Old Red Cow could do with a few more tables downstairs - I went in with a couple of older folk who couldn't manage the stairs and had to stand up!
