The ViewLondon Review

Right on the edge of Finchley, The Old White Lion gives the hip young professionals of North London a cool, salubrious local.

The Venue
Sitting below the railway bridge and in view of the tube trains rumbling into East Finchley station, the sizeable Old White Lion with mock-Tudor facade has a real presence. It looks as inviting as it is welcoming when you walk past the carved white lions guarding the entrance into the body of the building.

Greeted immediately by the long, well stocked bar, you have the choice of turning right to the intimate, softly lit former snug, or turning left into the more airy, chandelier-adorned seating area, complete with bead drapes, velvet furniture and over-sized lampshades. The subtle colours and bold prints of the contemporary decor are complemented by rock portraits adorning every wall – the work of a local artist. And, of course, the look is completed with antique mismatched furniture mixed with leather and velvet upholstery. Stroll further left onto the covered veranda, into the well-kept garden that hosts barbeques throughout the summer, and you are really spoilt for seating choice.

The Atmosphere
The Old White Lion is chilled, understated and relaxed. The majority of the twenty-to-thirtysomething customers are joined by a smattering of older, arty Finchley types, making a refined and well-heeled crowd, sometimes polished by the odd celebrity local who is always left in peace.

The Food
The reassuringly semi open plan kitchen serves an extensive British-Mediterranean selection of sandwiches, lights and mains with traditional pub desserts from 12pm-10pm every day. Sunday lunch is always superb, but get in early for a good seat.

The Drink
Famous for Fruli, the Belgian strawberry beer, The Old White Lion also offers an extensive range of European beers and lots of guest ales – all on draught. The impressive choice continues with bottled beers such as Brazilian Brahma, a well-selected wine list and the obligatory spirits, plus current favourites like Black Sambucca.

The Last Word
East Finchley is on the up – and it started at The Old White Lion.
