My wife an I have eaten at the Palmerston about once every 3 months for the past 4 years, and I can honestly say, we have never had a bad meal.

The service is often friendly rather than smooth, and the place is always full and noisy. We tend to opt for a table in the back room, which is a little quieter. But the food is consistently delicious, with a menu that changes regularly - you could not ask for a better quality gastropub!

My boyfriend and I visited the Palmerston after hearing great things about the food, and we weren't disappointed. It was very busy but, luckily, we managed to get a table for two. The pub had a great atmosphere and the food simply amazing! The oysters, steak and poached pears were my favourites!

My only little whinge would be the cost of the wine. When we got the bill we were very surprised that the wine cost more than the food! When queried, apparently the wine is sold per 500ml, a strange and different concept which meant wine cost considerably more than we thought. But all in all we loved it! We will be eating there again, just enjoying post meal drinks somewhere else.

My partner and I went for a meal here on a Sunday evening. The waitress was very slow, not just in serving but in registering what we said to her. A manager or another worker, (male) had to take our order. O asked for the confit of lamb. I cracked a tooth on it - it was burned and rock hard. It was inedible. When I returned it the slow waitress said she'd have to speak to the manger about replacing it. He came over and told us that the chef had looked at it and said it was fine so we had to pay for it. No apologies, no offer of anything else, even though I'd eaten just a couple of mouthfuls. He left us no choice but to stand up and leave. Dreadful overrated place. Never again!

Palmerston Bar & Dining Room has very pleasant staff, it was quite noisy, not a very romantic place but the food was excellent. We had three courses, wine, coffee and the bill was very good value. I will definitely come to the Palmerston Bar & Dining Room again.

I have dined at the The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room on many occasions and feel that the other reviews are not justified. I have been well looked after, and the food has been better than anything else in the West End. Remember that this is a Gastro pub and the service will not be the same as The Ivy.



The food, the wine and the service have always been wonderful. They have great write ups in some of the best restaurant guides and I believe they have just won an award for Best Gastro Pub in London, so they must do something right.



We are in a suburb of London and you can not be too elitist and refuse children. They are catering for everybody and that is why The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room is the best place to dine in East Dulwich and long may their success continue.

My partner and I had Sunday lunch at Palmerston Bar & Dining Room last week. We've not eaten there for a while and never on a Sunday, having read some of the poor reviews I was slightly concerned about going back, but when I rang to book a table and they were almost fully booked I felt more confident about our visit.

We ordered two starters which did not arrive and instead we were given our main course. We told the waitress we were awaiting our starters and she took the meals away. We continued to wait and this time another waitress brought back our main course. Finally it sunk in that we had not yet had our starters and they apologised for the mistake. We had by now drunk most of our wine during the hour we had been waiting for our starters, I think they should have offered us a free glass each but not a word. The starters were good and we equally enjoyed our main course. The puddings were on the mean side considering the price though and the service was not good.

Sunday lunches are probably not the best time for adults without kids. Palmerston really is like an upmarket kiddies restaurant, there were at least six children, eating their own special babyfood in high chairs and throwing toys around. When you're paying around £75 for two for Sunday lunch you would expect not to have to put up with this. We normally go to Franklins and just fancied a change of scene - at least at Franklins you don't feel you are attending high tea with the kids. I most certainly would not go back on a Sunday, I could see other people looking around rather disturbed by the atmosphere too. Bon appetite and watch that rattle!

Having read some of the rather old and even the more recent unflattering reviews of the Palmerston Bar & Dining Room I have to say that I'm surprised.

They must be doing something right, the stickers on the front door as you enter boast recognition from Egon Roney, the Hardens guide as well as AA rosettes.

Recently I've sampled braised lamb which melts in the mouth, wild sea bass cooked to perfection and my partner has always been more than happy with the vegetarian options at The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room.

The staff are real people, they don't pretend to be working in a fancy establishment and are always polite and happy to help in any way, they'll even call you a cab at the end of the night when you're too fat too move from all the delicious food.

For anyone that hasn't been to the Palmerston lately, give it another go. I love it, my partner loves it and everyone I've ever taken there has loved it too. Friendly, informal but with top quality food, The Palmerston Bar & Dining Roomg gets my thumbs up!

We won a voucher for lunch for two at The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room in a school raffle.

I rang to book the night before and checked that they had the 2 course lunch menu available which was what the voucher was for. When we arrived they said the voucher was only for Mondays to Fridays, and when we said it didn't say that on the voucher, they said that was just the situation.

It was a rather depressing response when The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room restaurant wasn't full and it wouldn't have harmed them to let us use the voucher.

My partner and I went to The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room last night after seeing the place packed out every Friday and Saturday night. I had the cod and he had the pheasant. I must say I was slightly disappointed by the food. It was fairly tasteless and did not leave a lasting impression.

The atmosphere is good in The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room, definitely. It's a lovely old building and deserves praise for that, but the staff were quite unreliable and uninformed about the menu. When I asked what was in the chicory salad the waiter replied, celery and mayonnaise. Wrong, it's chicory!

I don't think I would go there when it's busy and it's not value for money when you can go to Le Shannon down the road and get served beautiful French food for less of the price.

All in all, not bad but not great either, you leave with the feeling that it could be so much better. All I can think is that the middle classes who pack it out every Friday and Saturday night don't know what good food is or value for money at that.

Sadly the Palmerston Bar & Dining Room seems to be trading on its reputation and can't make up its mind whether it is a pub that serves good food, or a restaurant disguised as a pub (and a somewhat shabby one at that).



The prices at Palmerston Bar & Dining Room are certainly more restaurant than pub - and similar to some of the decent Chelsea gastro pubs. Whilst there may be some charm eating off a wobbly wood effect formica table, London has plenty of others places to do that at a fration of the price.



The service at Palmerston Bar & Dining Room was painfully slow (45 minutes between removing our first course and serving up the main) and then only after chasing it. When it arrived, the chips were burnt to the point where they were inedible and the pork was pink inside (apparently that's the way they like to do it).



I suggest the owners of the Palmerston visit some of the other gastro pubs around London to see what it is possible to achieve.

The Palmerston Bar and Dining Room is a fine place to go for some top treatment. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes you feel at home. The Palmerston Bar and Dining Room has a great menu and the food is fantastic. We enjoyed an excellent night.

I went there expecting great things from what I had read about the place on the internet. When making the booking, I asked if they catered for vegetarians and they said they had "plenty" of veggie options. We turned up and there was one veggie starter and one main course. Ok, I'm used to this but the starter was pasta with parmesan and the main course was pasta with tomato sauce. When I questioned the waitress whether I was really expected to have pasta for both my starter and main, and two such unimaginative dishes at that (priced at £6.50 and £9.50 respectively) I was told very begrudgingly that I could have a green salad instead. Totally unacceptable - so we walked. I would rank this place as 0 if possible. The lies told when booking, the lack of imagination (and respect) for vegetarian food and the appalling attitude of the staff have left me feeling so embittered that I walked out of a restaurant for the first time in my life. Shocking.

The Palmerstone Bar & Dining room was a great disappointment. Service ranged from apathetic to contemptuous, after which the food isn't even worth going into. A thoroughly disagreeable experience.
