I would strongly discourage booking the pub for events. They have a tendency to cancel last minute, even after they have taken your deposit, because their organisation and management are a mess.
If you can, avoid it for your special occasion!
I went to The Pelican last Thursday, and what a night. Every Thursday it's 'No Bill' a game where you can roll dice against the bar staff in order to win drinks. This was right up my street as I like a little bit of a gamble now and then! We definitely came out on top - I paid for 2 rounds and won 3. We cheekily went for a bottle of champagne on the last round and there were whoops of excitement from my crew when I rolled a double 6 and we won it!
The other groups of people who were in there were also equally exciteable too. The dice rolling added a really fun element to what would've been a fairly normal night on the sauce.
All in all a great atmosphere and a charming team of staff made this a really memorable night. A pioneering pub in the area for sure- I'll be making it a regular stop off (especially on Thursdays!)!
My wife and I popped into The Pelican after strolling around Portabello on Saturday. It's ever so slightly off the beaten track so you feel as if you have found a real jem, as many of the pubs around the main market strip are quite heavy with tourists. The recent refurbishment looks great - all the original features still there, but the place has real sparkle to it now. We both had Lamb Cutlets which were delicious, and we washed it down with a bottle of Pino Grigio Blush, leaving afterwards with very happy faces and bellies!
The new guys at The Pelican have done a great job of giving this pub its charm back. Out with the bar fittings and in with oodles of traditional pub charm. Haven't eaten there yet but have admired plates from afar and will definitley go back for the roasts soon. Well kept real ales and a fab Rioja kept us in for hours. A new jewel in the Notting Hill crown.
An interesting place, The Pelican is apparently an organic bar. That might be why the prices are pretty high. The decor is a mismatch of different odds and sods and the atmosphere is friendly. The bar is packed with people waiting for tables at the busy restaurant.
The service at The Pelican is very good.
