I was in The Peoples Republic on Saturday night to celebrate my birthday with about 40 of my friends. Tom and Laura the Managers where extremely accommodating, providing us with a nice area for the night despite booking at the last minute.
I thought the bar staff did a fantastic job, very friendly and extremely efficient considering how many people where there. I don’t think I waited more than a minute to get a drink.
I have heard people say the bar is maybe a bit expensive on the drinks front but I thought the prices where quite reasonable and it was good to see cocktails that you could actually drink rather than 2 sips and your finished.
altogether a very good night and I would recommend it to anyone.
So big thanks to Laura, tom and the rest of the team
Conveniently placed bar across the road from Clapham Common tube with a more rock/pop-based music selection than most Clapham venues. Good (though pricey) selection of bottled beers and cocktails. Can get uncomfortably packed on Saturday nights, but still a good place to start off your evening.
I was a fan of this place when it first arrived in Clapham, now I can't wait until it goes away, which it surely will with the service standards I've been receiving of late.
The girls waiting the tables for drinks are simply useless, most of the time it's quicker to head to the bar youself. I will NOT go there again, the service & shoddy decore are inexcuseable when there are some fine bars nearby.
I've been a semi-regular at the People's Republic but I'll not be returning after my experience on Saturday night.
I was served two drinks both of which appeared to contain ants floating in them. Not acceptable.
The situation was handled very badly by the waitress on duty, who (rather reluctantly and very slowly) replaced my drink, twice, with no apology. When we asked to her replace my friend's drink (as her's also contained mint and sugar syrup, and she didn't want to chance hoovering up a bug) the waitress made me feel uncomfortable and I felt like apologising for the situation rather than the other way around.
We ended up paying for two cocktails and drinking half a cocktail and my friend's replacement beer and then leaving as very unhappy customers. I have noticed on my last few visits that staff are less welcoming and bordering on rude.
Overall, totally unacceptable service and totally unacceptable handling of food and drink.
So good to see a high street bar with personality and charisma and without pretention or arrogance. The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen has excellent cocktails and spirit range too. The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen is perfect for a mid-week drink. Well done guys!
I was in The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen on Friday night. Myself and four of my girlfriends decided to meet there as it was the closest bar to the Clapham Common tube. We only intended to stay for one drink but ended up staying the whole night.
The highlight of the night was the friendly service and amazing cocktails. Another thing worth mentioning is the unpretentious crowd. It seemed so carefree, everyone there simply wanted a good time and the bartenders made sure all felt welcome with their friendly chat and smiles.
The vibe at The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen was excellent and we will definitely be going back to check out their Saturday night.
I have been to the Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen many times and always loved it. It is great to go to a bar in Clapham at the weekend and not hear house music all the time. The cocktails are fantastic and The Peoples republic Bar & Kitchen staff are friendly. I love this place.
I'm a Clapham local and the Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen is one of the best additions to the local scene for a while. Sure it's not the biggest bar in world, but the cocktails are definitely the best on the strip and the bartenders are properly trained and know what they are doing.
My cocktail recommendation for the Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen is the Claphamite and you've got to try those Wasabi nuts - awesome.
Having visited The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen six or seven times now I can't stop raving about it! The bar staff are incredible to watch in full flow, five orders at a time, smiling and throwing bottles, they are true professionals.
I've never seen anything like it before, and it's clearly not for the faint hearted. If you're up for some good old fashioned banter and great cocktails then go to The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen.
I agree with the last two comments. The bar staff at Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen are more than rude - they are obnoxious and offensive. My favourite comment being - "What? No t*ts! I'm serving you later."
The tall blonde barman is the worst. He shouts at people and deliberately overcharges them. I would never ever go back here and strongly warn you against visiting The Peoples Republic Bar unless you want to ruin a good night out.
I totally agree with the last review. The People's Republic Bar & Kitchen is uncomforatble, the staff are rude, it is over expensive and it seriously lacked females. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
The People's Republic Bar & Kitchen is poor, poor, poor! This place was uncomfortably rammed and it took forever to get served. There was also an uncomortable ratio of men to women. The drinks were super expensive and really not worth the wait. I am unlikely to return to The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen.
The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen is pure class with great food, music and women! The guy who wrote the bad review about his 'tapas selection' is a buffoon. The Peoples Republic is the best bar in Clapham by a mile...
The Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen is absolutely top notch. Great music, food and atmosphere... easily the best bar in Clapham.
I was in People's Republic last Saturday and the vibe was excellent. I could never have imagined you could get a bar like this in Clapham. I was feeling particularly unenthusiatic about going out that night but this bar really lifted my mood. The drinks were fantastic and so were the staff. They really go out of their way to greet you and make you feel welcome. I have to say the music was fantastic too, it felt like I was in a bar/club in Hoxton. The DJs maintained a cool but edgy vibe all night which had me up and dancing until last orders. I highly recommend the Peoples Republic to anyone. Keep up the good work!
I've been going to the People's Republic since it opened and think it's great - finally a venue in Clapham that serves quality drinks with excellent service. Unfortunately, whatever was going on on Friday 3 March, it all went wrong - poor music which was far too loud, too many people and poor service at the bar.
After only managing to get 2 drinks in 3 hours we left. Their head bartender wasn't there and the difference was glaringly obvious...big queues at the bar meant the bar area was very overcrowded. I'm happy spending a few bob on a cocktail but when you end up spilling half of it on the floor trying to get away from the bar it's no fun. The waiting staff, who are also usually excellent, seemed totally overstretched too.
I had hoped this venue would offer the kind of environment that wasn't overcrowded, where you could meet up with friends, drink well made cocktails and listen to good music. If not being overcrowded means turning people away when it's busy then so be it - if it's done right it'll make people be there earlier rather than never go near the place again. Let's hope it isn't the shape of things to come and was just an 'off-night' for the Peoples Republic!
I was at Peoples Republic last night and had perfectly cooked rare steak which arrived within 20 mins - perfect. Peoples Republic has a nice relaxed vibe with plenty of atmosphere, although it was only Monday, and the guys make a spicy Bloody Mary.
Peoples Republic is a great addition to the Clapham scene with a nice drinks list, good tunes and the friendliest staff in the area. I've only tried the burger which was huge and tasty.
Peoples Republic is a refreshing change from others bars in the area which take themselves a bit too seriously - you know who you are!!!
I love Peoples Republic Bar & Kitchen, finally a real venue in Clapham without the cheese or try hards. Me and my friends went on a bar crawl along the high street on Saturday night and Peoples Republic had, by far, the best/coolest vibe.
Music was slick, drinks were fairly priced for a high street and the bartender even introduced himself and apologised for the wait. I did have to wait a bit to get to the bar but who doesn't on a Sat night in any half decent joint?
Peoples Republic has got so much more going for it then any other place on the high street by far, looking foward to our next session at the Republic.
People's Republic Bar & Kitchen is awful! Greasy frozen food - took an hour for our "tapas" selection to arrive - and their pork and lamb kebabs were fatty. Ordered a veggie burger with fries which was best described as something you wouldn't even feed your dog - it was a mulch of processed vegetables that you couldn't even determine what was in it. Fries were greasy and cold. Wouldn't recommend the People's Republic Bar & Kitchen!
I love The Peoples Republic Bar and Kitchen - it's saved the day in Clapham. Generally I try to avoid meeting up in Clapham as everyone tends to talk in braying voices about how much money they have but The Peoples Republic Bar and Kitchen is so different. A bar that actually listens to its customers? Bring it on!
