I had read all the reviews of the Phene and booked it for my birthday, however when I phoned to confirm there was no record of my booking at all. 2 days before my birthday and now I have to find somewhere else. Very unprofessional and I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.
There are plenty of places in this area that appreciate their clientèle unlike the Phene. They aren't arrogant to think that they can treat possible clients badly and expect then to come back.
Perfect. I been in Phene 2 weeks ago on my holidays to UK. I came from Dubai, never seen such place even in Dubai. Everything was well managed. Very nice food and very nice place to sit outside. The only drawback i saw , was they had limited license to serve outside and closed the garden by 10 pm. Customer service was OK but i would say and appreciate the work of the security team who had been appointed to make sure that the noise level is not very high to disturb the neighbourhood and also to differentiate that smoking area is for smoking only and not for drinking, it was bit funny though. but as they were doing what they had been told to. But the way they handled the situations and timing, it was very nice to look at. They were nice looking guys with nice and polite communication. And i think that's the only reason they managed to overcome all the challenges given by the the authorities. Places are important to look at before we go but i would recommend that the service and food was awesome too. I am planning to visit there soon again.
Amazingly beautiful pub - got to be the best looking bar I've seen in a while. Ridiculously hot girls too... if you want to see the Chelsea set in full swing - this is the place to be. Spotted Hugo and Spencer from Made in Chelsea (TV show) in the main bar and my friend said he saw Mika (the singer) here in the garden last time he was here over the summer. Good people watching place!
They have turned the garden into a snow garden for the winter with big outdoor fireplaces and heaters so it feels like you might as well be inside its so warm. Decent staff although it was incredibly busy so service a little slow but we didn't really mind as the food itself was really good. I liked everything i ordered - celery and stilton soup starter, Chicken and mushroom pie with green beans and we shared a couple of "Dolce Platters" for dessert (sweet sharing boards - had caramel cupcake, chocolate brownie, a marshmallow stick, lemon cream, and raspberries on it but it changes every day apparently)
Will definitely be back - a real re-drinks winner.
What an amazing dinner at Phene. The atmosphere was great and the staff seemed very friendly. I recommend you go there and experience the great time in secluded location.
The Phene my local Chelsea pub (now designer bar) where we started off our stag night. Nice cocktails in beautiful surrounding before heading off to the main event at Peacock Bar in Clapham.
Don't bother, I wish we hadn't!
i am not really sure where to start with this so let's go from the begginning. I went for a close friends' birthday celebration for which we had booked an area outside. Upon arriving I was ignored by two members of staff before finding the private area myself and heading in. Not a good start but forgiveable eventhough they weren't that busy.
Went to order a drink, a Bloody Mary in fact. Any decent pub can make a reasonable bloddy mary and it really should only take a couple of minutes to make from scratch, so needless to say i was surprised when mine appeared 20 seconds later from a Jug in the fridge. Again forgiveable if made well and tasty but this was one of the worst Bloody Mary's I have ever had and to be charged £8.50 for the privilege was laughable.
Having quickly got rid of that drink I thought I would settle for a beer as what can go wrong? Well, all of the draft taps were broken, something to do with the chiller, OK a bottle then? A prettty poor selection of offer and I was informed that i should wait for 15-20 minutes as the bottles were not cold because the fridgeges were not working properly. Really?? My rubbish bloddy mary was cold enough. And again, being charged £4.10 for a warm beer is totally unacceptable.
During the actualy party, the canapes served were actually not too bad although not all together thrilling, in fact the best thing was the bite size fish and chips which was actually quite tasty but any half decent pub can do fish and chips. The service again let this down with waiters constantly bumping into people, taking away half drunk drinks and general rudeness. in fact, when someone jokingly mentioned the warm beer, one guy simply said "put it in the ice bucket then" - Rude
I did mention my misgivings to the Manager on the day who simply told me that they were very busy.
Anyway, for a pub in a VERY smart area you would expect them to care a bit more about their customers needs
I never write reviews, but I feel compelled to say that I had a horrible dining experience at The Phene and would never recommend this place to anyone. The service was horrible, the food absolutely mediocre and certainly not of Gastropub standard, it was overpriced and an absolute disappointment. Don't waste your time or money at this place!
Probably the worst service I have ever had in London, or anywhere for that matter. It would seem that this place is run by a bunch of teenagers. I booked this "gastropub" to take two of my close friends to who were in from out of town. What a mistake! From the moment we entered the service was absolutely abominable. The host had an earpiece in as if he was at the front door of a club. When he finally showed us to our table we realized that we were actually sitting at what had been the kids table from the event they had hosted earlier. We knew this because there was a big sign that said "Baby Room" which they had forgot to take down. There was a large glass of milk left on the table which spilled on my friend. They did not have enough menus to go around, and they were out of a few things. The food was so uninspiring in fact that 4 of us ordered burgers. My friend and I had ordered a steamed artichoke to start with lemon butter dipping sauce. The waiter brought us canned artichoke hearts on a bed of lettuce. What a joke! He did take them off the bill when we complained. When the burgers and chips came, he apologetically told us they had run out of ketchup! Never in all of my years have I been to a pub/restaurant that has run out of ketchup! The burger was dry and the chips were not the delicious sort that one enjoys eating with out ketchup. This experience was a disaster and disappointment from start to finish. It is a lovely space with a great outdoor space, so it is a shame they haven't been able to get their service in order and I would certainly not call what was on the menu Gastropub food. New management and chef are definitely in order. Save your money and time and go to one of the other very lovely true gastropubs in Chelsea.
The staff here were so incredibly unhelpful, and seemed determined not to serve with most gathered around a small radio in the corner. The toilets were disgusting and the food was overpriced.
Having ordered a cab at the end of the night we were almost pushed into the road by annoying door staff who were afariad of us making any noise at 9pm on a Friday! Felt more like a prison then a pub - never again!
Been meaning to try this place for a while. Went on Friday and had THE BEST lunch which turned into an all afternoon and evening drink and food fest in the garden. They have clearly spent a ton of money on this place - the garden has a water fountain and outdoor fireplaces and lots of sofas.. its really very pretty.
Didn't spend much time inside but looked very busy in the bar on the way down to the toilets. Toilets also very designer-y - crystal door handles and big mirrors.... it was a bit random but there was a toilet attendant in the girls loos which i always thought was only a club thing but it was certainly a nice touch - she passed me a towel to dry my hands, and let me take a gum all smiles even though i didn't have a quid for a tip! Food wise, we all started with a couple of generous sized sharing platters... the mezze platter is basically a ton of dips and nice wholemeal pittas with some ricotta stuffed peppers and vine leaves - decent stuff! Later we shared a couple dishes off the specials menu as apparently they're trying out items which will be on their new forthcoming summer menu on the specials at the moment. We had a seriously nice duck, watermelon and pomegranate salad and a herbed seabass and sultana couscous dish which was very colourful and fresh. The boys had big steaks which they said were really good (they looked pretty pink to me and i don't like that so i didn't sample!)
Drinks wise they stock this amazing cider ive tried only once before at the waterside pub in imperial wharf... Its a swedish cider (i think) called Rekorderlig and is very sweet, flavoured with either lime and strawberry, pear or mixed berries.. i absolutely love it and drank more than i care to admit of this!!
I also had a "fresh" smoothie was was amazing - tasted completely of fresh fruits with little bits of passion fruit in it. Lovely jubbly. The table next to ours saw us ordering these and ordered them too!
Next time i have a sunny afternoon off i'll be back
Terrible. Food was expensive and unpleasant. Drinks and beer are very expensive. The outside area has plenty of space and is nice in the sun, but the attitude of the pub's security guys ruined the whole afternoon.
There were three of them patrolling the area making sure no one was making excessive noise - it was like drinking in a prison. My friend was twice asked not to laugh as loudly as it was disturbing the local residents - and this was at 6pm on a sunny April afternoon. I appreciate it must be annoying for those living near by if the garden is noisy late in to the evening but this was just way over the top, and additionally the security guy was extremely rude about it. The rest of the bar staff were helpful and pleasant however.
Toilets were smelly, uncleaned and had pools of urine on the floor - not acceptable for a place that is charging such prices.
A really nice setting with a relaxed atmosphere. The food is really good and well priced. The bar staff are friendly and helpful, well worth a visit!
Went back to the Phene for the 3rd time last week. I have to say it is the nicest environment to enjoy a casual dinner with friends.
it may be a little bit expensive, but all of London is. The food was generous and healthy. My Sunday Roast was the best I have had in London, as was the bottle of wine our waiter reccomended. Sitting in there on a sunday afternoon is ideal, its warm, firendly and full of both young and old people who just want to enjoy themselves.
The icing on the cake was that the manager remembered me coming in a couple of times and so gave us the most delicious crumbles for Pudding ON THE HOUSE! a small touch but goes a long way to making me want to keep going back.
Surprised by the couple of bad reviews below.. this place is great. Relatively new i think but beautiful inside, generous sized terrace (for middle of Chelsea). Went on Friday night, friendly waitresses, buzzing bar, i didn't notice slow service, everything seemed to come pretty quickly but we were chatting away!
Had a couple of champagne blackberry mojitos (recommended by Merlin, our very sweet waitress) - very fresh with lots of berries - only thing i would say is..... it was so fresh and filled with berries that it was hard to suck up with a straw!! We shared a big deli board of charcuterie and cheeses - a good selection, so we were happy enough to pay £16, which yes, is expensive, but we shared it between 3 of us and the hams all seemed very "nice deli-ish" instead of the usual "out of the packet" standard pub style charcuterie offerings!
Tried a Swedish strawberry cider there too which I'd never seen before - it was very sweet so might not be to everyones taste, but i loved it and liked that I'd never seen it before. My boyfriend commented they had a lot of different and interesting beers ales and ciders so they seem to have taken some time over the drinks choices.
The girl who runs it is a local Chelsea-ite, and apparently pretty young (her parents own it) and the place did seem to be filled with "those types" but not in a pretentious way, pretty relaxed ... everyone enjoying drinks on a Friday night. Feels very "local" in a nice, Chelsea way!
Would, and will, go back.
Wow! What a difference in customer service now than when it first opened. The wait staff have finally started to manicure their craft. I have been there a few times and the diffrence from the beginning to now is amazing. I agree the menu maybe a bit pricey, but the atmosphere and friendly staff make up for it. You may have to wait a bit longer if they are busy, which is quite common, but with their lovely cocktails and sharing platters and warm decor you'll hardly notice. You'll be well pleased to bring a few friends and relax and have a lovey evening.
Had a meal there on 29 December 2010 - came to £74 a head. Very very over-priced for ordinary food. They even took our expensive wine away after 11.00pm - literally taking our glasses from our hands - even though we were in the private dining room upstairs. I have never had this happen to me in 30 years dining in London. We will definitely not be going back. Not patch on the old Phene Arms, which I used to like. Terrible.
This HAS to be one of the most pretentious, overrated and underwhelming restaurants/bars in London. The food, for what it is, is alarmingly overpriced, the service is awful (slow, nervous and inexperienced waitresses and bartenders), and the patrons are beyond rude, narcissistic and loud; young professional women that made sure to have their Manolo Blahnik heels shined down the street before strolling in, and men that think being casual is wearing a pink sweater around their neck and drinking a Cosmo, while telling a joke about the UK mortgage market. I honestly would recommend this place only if you want a nice walk around a beautiful bar before you use their bathroom and run somewhere where an awful hamburger doesn't cost you 12 pounds.
Lovely garden and posh interiour with a scandinavian touch. This must one of London's most beautiful people spotting. Food is a bit too expensive for what you get and service can be slow when busy, and it's most often busy there. But the dreamy athmosphere makes up for it.
On advice of one of my good friends i went to The Phene last week. The place looks amazing and I was so pleased that there is a quiet and peaceful garden to enjoy the sunshine in.
The staff were friendly and the food was very impressive. I ate the Sea Bass and then the pear and almond tart. Most of all though it was the atmosphere and attention to detail that made this my new favourite place to be in Chelsea.
