The ViewLondon Review
Tucked away by Streatham Common, The Pied Bull may look like your average drinking establishment from the outside, but some truly gastronomic delights lay within.
The Venue
Framed by large stained glass windows, the colourful entrance to The Pied Bull is a welcoming contrast to the drab exterior of this large building, looming on Streatham High Road.
The vast interior, with its tall ceilings and homely decoration, offers two separate bars. Several nooks and well-placed squashy sofas can be found hiding round each corner, offering a nice place to lounge. With the spacious rooms and copious seating, it's never difficult to find a comfy place to enjoy a drink - even on a busy night.
The outdoor area is a great place to sit - weather permitting - with large round tables, heaters and a smoking area that boasts outdoor flat screen TVs so you won’t miss the football during the summer season.
The Atmosphere
With a clientele made up of local regulars and the staff of the nearby Sainsburys frequenting dropping by, The Pied Bull offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The staff can often be seen sharing a joke with one of their local punters and will most likely let you in on it if you are nearby. On a Sunday, the venue becomes a popular place for families who are looking for good food and a pint in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The Food
This is where The Pied Bull becomes more than just a drinking establishment. The venue offers a large menu with food ranging from typical pub grub such as fish and chips and meat pies, to more lavish offerings that push the menu to gastronomic proportions.
Greek platters, salad, pizza, fresh fish, and a decent roast dinner on a Sunday give you a wide selection to choose from, and most mains feature as part of a meal deal. The goat cheese salad is a popular choice with a large serving of baked goat cheese on a fried crouton surrounded by mixed leaves and sun dried tomatoes - your mouth waters as the mixture of sweet and sour tingles your tastebuds. For dessert, the homemade sticky toffee pudding will ease your sweet tooth with its lashings of freshly made toffee sauce and double cream.
The Drink
To accompany the good food there's a selection of the usual lager and spirits, as well as a great variety of European ales available on tap and an extensive wine list with Champagne. All are reasonably priced with a pint costing around £2.50 and a spirit-mixer costing just over £3.00.
The Last Word
With its location on the busy Streatham High Road, The Pied Bull may not seem so appealing from the outside, but with one look at the menu any passerby would be easily poached inside. Once through those large front doors, the comfortable and friendly interior - along with some good ales - allows the venue to make the leap from local pub to gastropub in a few tasty mouthfulls.
