The ViewLondon Review
Two great outdoor areas make The Pilgrim a real find in the summer, whilst the indoor fireplaces keep it equally high on the list in the winter. With a friendly atmosphere and a chilled back vibe it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area.
The Venue
Very close to the Oval cricket ground, The Pilgrim is located on a corner plot with a pleasant outdoor seating area to the front, and an attractive rear courtyard area, making it a star find in the summer.
Inside, you’ll find a modern decor with a rustic twist, the finish is high quality with leather sofas and lots of seating and dining furniture. Two attractive feature fireplaces (making this an equally decent find in the colder months) and a couple of plasma screens on the walls allow for live sport to be shown. Pool tables complete the set up. There are a few regular theme evenings including cocktail nights, live jazz and karaoke.
The Atmosphere
The Pilgrim tends to be frequented by the younger end of the market, with a skew towards local workers and residents. The atmosphere here is definitely friendly, missing out on the intimidation factor that some of the pubs of Vauxhall seem to possess. The staff, in particular, are warm, friendly and as pleasant to strangers as they are the clear regulars.
The Food
The food menu at The Pilgrim isn’t huge but it’s not trying to be a gastropub. Here they offer simple pub grub that is more than edible with hot sandwiches at £5.50 for a ciabatta or wrap with fries or salad. The butchers sausage and red onion is particularly delicious. Soup of the day is £3.75 and the signature dish, Pilgrims mexican nachos are £5.95. Pasta of the day with garlic bread and salad is from £6.25.
The Drink
Fosters, Guinness, John Smith, Kronenbourg, Strongbow and San Miguel are all available on draught. Bottled you’ll find Corona, Becks, Budweiser, Bulmers and Leche. Premier spirits are on sale as well as the aforementioned cocktails. House wine is £9.70 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc.
The Last Word
An attractive pub, inside and out, with a very friendly atmosphere. The Pilgrim is a great spot come rain or shine and is worth popping into if you’re in the area.
