I have to agree with the below two reviews! Carl, Chris, Brendan, Trout, Seb, Sophie, and Jo regularly make your Friday night funnier and more exciting by having good Pub banter and always making you feel welcome from when you walk in the door to when they wave you out when you leave. Friday nights seem to be the busy night of the weekend with Live music from talented Acoustic sets to regular full bands. Saturday has the football/rugby feel to the place as you' struggle not to see a tv screen as there are so many beautiful Sony Hdtvs hanging off the walls. With a recent refurb the place has a smart look to it. And since most people seem to think the quality of the toilets is very important for a pub review I'll note that the toilets are the highlight of the refurb as they have even colour co-ordinated the urinals with the new paint job. (classy). It's the sort of place that's not over-rated and thats what makes it attractive as the bar staff nor the clientele aren't full of themselves and don't charge you over the top prices (for London). A new football table, Darts board, Pool table and even a Wii make The Pilgrim a top pub and they throw a good Birthday party as we experienced for my flat mate. Much better Value for Money than the Dog House and Tommy Field up the road, suffers from a quiet Saturday (although I can't figure out why! The Pilgrim should be packed!).
I certainly echo the sentiments of the below review, great staff (Don't think I had the pleasure of meeting the owner though). Very friendly vibe, live music some nights. Beer garden looks pretty awesome too though have never been here on a sunny day. Worth checking out for sure
This pub has become my local and I love it here! It has obliviously changed hands since 2007 because the toilets are very clean and the staff are the opposite of rude. They are friendly and welcoming! Often before my boyfriend and I have even got to the bar the bar staff will have started pouring our regular drinks! It has a pool table, which is a rarity in close to central London, a dart board, a quiz machine, board games to play, tv to watch. The owner is from New Zealand and he has introduced himself to us and is keen to keep improving the pub. He was very nice! The focus is on friendly bar staff. There are different people in there every week and it is easy to get chatting to others! They really do make you feel welcome. I am looking forward to going there on Saturday to see some live music! In the summer it will be great to sit outside and chill! Oh and the food is good - lot of speciality burgers on offer! Go there - you will not regret it!
my boyfriend and I walk past this pub every sunday on the way to tesco which is just next door but had never given it much of a thought until a friend of ours organised her 30th bday here. very cool little pub with possibly the best service I have encountered in a london pub! we go in quite regularly now and the staff are so friendly we almost feel bad if we walk past without stopping in. boyfriend can often be found there watching the football on week nights too - he likes to think of it as his "local". Strongly recommend popping in for a drink if you are in the area.
I went into this pub with a few friends because it looked nice on the outside. That is all that is nice. The barmaid behind the bar was too busy to notice me because she was making eyes to a man sitting at the bar. When she did finally serve us I found her miserable and not at all friendly, probably explains why the pub was dead!
Don't waste time visiting this pub, the interior decor is nice but not for a pub in Kennington. It has no atmosphere, rude bar staff and the toilets were disgusting.
The Pilgrim underwent a change of ownership and with it went the Carribean food and dated decor. Refurbished last summer its now an attractive and comfortable pub with beer gardens front and back. Offering everything from affordable modern cuisine to weekly BBQs and Live Jazz nights to crazy cheesy classic karaoke, The Pilgrim simply has something for everyone.
The Guvnor.
I have been to The Pilgrim and the food was excellent, the staff are friendly, and it was busy. I'm not to sure about them serving Chinese food though. And the karaoke was funny. The Pilgrim is a cool pub.
I think The Pilgrim might have new owners because they are now advertising Chinese food. The last time I was there I didn't enjoy it though. The place was empty and there was no atmosphere at all. We didn't stay long because The Pilgrim wasn't happening and when we called back later it was still dead. Maybe the Chinese food will bring back the punters?
