The ViewLondon Review
The Pilot is one of the best-kept secrets in Greenwich – a beautiful and traditional pub complete with friendly service, moderately priced drinks, and a stunning beer garden.
The Venue
The Pilot is inconveniently located on the outskirts of Greenwich. It’s easy to reach by car, but you’d need to walk a bit of a distance from North Greenwich Station to get there. This pub, which narrowly escaped demolition plans to make way for the Greenwich Peninsula, is a spacious offering decked head to toe in traditional pub furniture – it’s a shame that someone wanted to knock it down.
Aside from a wonderful interior, The Pilot also has a delightful beer garden, which tends to get very busy over the summer. However, it can also be used during the colder months thanks to the patio heaters.
The Atmosphere
Once you’ve entered The Pilot you’ll immediately be taken aback by the delightfully warm atmosphere it manages to retain, despite being an overly posh local. You’ll usually find middle aged couples and older individuals here, overindulging in traditional pub cuisine with a brandy or two on the side. The staff are very friendly and you’re always greeted with a Colgate smile upon arrival. There’s also a TV here, so you can expect to see a crowd of footie louts cheering or booing the hour away, depending on who’s winning.
The Drink
You’ll be surprised by how moderately priced the drinks are here. On the pumps, you have your standard beer selection, with a pint of Fosters costing you no less than £3.05. On the spirit and mixers front, you’ll be paying about £3.50, and a non-alcoholic soft drink will cost you about 2 quid. The pub also has a good selection of wines (red and white) with the average costing about £20.
The Last Word
The Pilot is the perfect place to enjoy an evening without hassle. If you’re lucky enough to be around Greenwich in the summer, you can take full advantage of the wonderful beer garden (if you can find a place to sit).
