The ViewLondon Review
A large and imposing venue just off Dulwich’s Lordship Lane, The Plough is ideal for big groups as it has plenty of room and a good drink offering, too.
The Venue
There’s a huge amount of space inside, with a large bar in the centre, tables and chairs on all sides and a conservatory to the rear where you can also find a beer garden. There’s also some space outside the front, so getting a seat shouldn’t be a problem. Dark wood is the main theme, with brickwork around the bar and paintings dotted on the walls.
The Atmosphere
The spacious interior gives a light and airy feel that luckily doesn’t make the pub feel cold. Guests are spread out, so it’s easy to have a cosy meal for two or a big get-together without being disturbed. There’s also live music on a regular basis, which helps to liven things up. Staff are helpful and friendly.
The Food
The menu changes daily and starters may include paris brown and oyster mushroom, roasted onion and spinach tart with hollandaise (£6), or potted beef, horseradish and chive crème fraîche (£5.75). This arrives as a big serving of bread, pickle and beef, although it does lack in flavour somewhat. Mains include pub classics like beer-battered haddock and chips with minted mushy peas and tartare (£9.75), which again comes in a ginormous portion, and warm halloumi with a bean and avocado salad and lemon and chilli dressing (£9.75), which unfortunately does not live up to its description as it comprises of breaded balls of halloumi and a giant serving of lettuce that leaves you hunting for any beans or avocado and a dressing with no sign of a chilli kick – a disappointment at that price. Perhaps it’s best to stick to other classics like handmade West Country beef burger, mature cheddar and smoked bacon with chips (£9.25) and free range Gloucester Old Spot sausages, crushed pea mash and red onion gravy (£8.75).
The Drink
House wine is pretty good and there are plenty of bottles to choose from. There are also over 20 specialty beers including several rotating ales and ciders on tap, alongside homemade seasonal soft drinks and a comprehensive spirit offering.
The Last Word
A firm favourite with local Dulwich dwellers, The Plough might not be a destination that people will go out of their way to visit, but for a drink with friends, it is a very popular pub in this part of town.
