We met up with family and were planning to have a nice sunday roast. We sat at our table and decided what we were going to eat. It was fairly busy and we waited a short while for the waitress to take our order. About thirty minutes later a waiter came to our table with two plates of food one of which was fish and the other one a roast. We said that they were probably for another table, as none of us had ordered fish, but five of us had ordered the roast pork. So he left the one plate with the pork, luckily my son didn't touch the food, as thirty seconds later the waiter came back and took the plate away. Reminded me of a Basil Fawlty sketch. After an hour and a quarter, and two visits to the bar to ask when we could expect our food, the waiter brought four of the six meals to the table. Two of us watched the other four eat, and by then we had all lost our appetites due to being so angry. I finally decided to have a word with the 'manager', asked what had happened to our food, and was told there had been a glitch with the computer system and they had lost eight orders, but they had still managed to send four meals to our table. When I protested, I was told to calm down and he would speak to me when he'd sorted out the problem with another customers order. While I was waiting, a poor couple who were trying to get their food, just walked out in disgust. After I sat down to wait for an apology another lady went to enquire about her food. When we finally got an explanation, the 'manager' told us about the problem he had with staff. We made it clear that we had no intention of paying for the meals, which by the way, were of very poor quality, we've had better food at half the price, and were told that was fine. We were also given a card which would entitle us to a round of drinks free on our next visit. The card was thrown away. We will not be going back. As another reviewer said, this pub could be great in the right hands. You have been warned!
Terrible 'PUB'. Staff are non-respondent and quite frankly unhelpful and useless. Arrived early on Friday night, not at all busy. Order two bar snacks, a salad and battered squid, which any human, skilled or not, could knock up in about 15mins at best. And that is being generous! But we were made to wait for over an HOUR! At around 30 - 40mins, I enquired to the whereabouts of the food. I finally got hold of someone, to then tell me.... "Oh, weren't you told, there is an hour wait for food" in a casual and flippant way; as if that is a normal thing! Not once was there an apology. I've had several bad experiences at the Plough, always given it another chance as its my closest pub, but to be honest, to any locals or anyone thinking of visiting... DON'T BOTHER! You're better off walking that little further down Lordship Lane and enjoying The Bishop, The Actress, ETD, and many more....
I want to love this Pub but I just can't. This review is a a call out to the owners and Manager of this potentially great Pub. Reading through some of the reviews below it would seem that they've have the same experience of poor quality food and dreadful service. The bar staff are friendly but having only two bar staff for a Friday night when you've got a band on is insufficient. Especially when they totally ignore one side of the pub. Waiting 20 minutes to be served at the bar when there are only 4 of us waiting at the bar is unacceptable. I struggle to understand why the owners have gone to so much effort to furnish the pub in such a cosy and welcoming way but not bothered with the food and service. Please Please Please do something about this. I've tried this pub on 5 occasions in the hope that it gets better because I truly think this pub has great potential. Your beer garden is gorgeous and I love the fact that you have live music.
Nice pub, good atmosphere and good food. But if you order food the service is poor. I've been there twice with a group of people and they won't take orders from the table even for large groups. Last time they just dumped the cutlery on the table and even when I ordered a bottle of wine they made me struggle back to the table with all of the glasses.
Looks lovely from the outside and that is where you really should stay...although the drinks are ok and you cant really mess up a G&T and a packet of crisps the staff have some crazy attitude problems.
Despite these bad beginnings we tried a second time for dinner hoping we'd caught them on a bad day, no such luck.
The food was dreadful, veggie pie burnt on the bottom and lukewarm on top, tough meat and mushy veg to go with it. Yuck.
Save yourself the hassle and go elsewhere if you want anything edible with your pint.
I am amazed at the positive review here. Based on my experience today the praise is completely unjustified.
To begin with we had a bar man who took our order, then forgot about us! He went off to clear tables. We managed to get the attention of another bar man was way too cool for school, and had a real attitude problem.
We then had to wait about an hour for food, which when it arrived was beyond belief bad. Beef was grey cold and tough. Bought in lasagne.
Awful veggie bean thing, we are talking send it back bad. It's a shame we couldn't because we were with the manageress' relative.
To cap it all, when we came to pay there were over £30 worth of items we hadn't had! This took an age to sort out, and no apology was forthcoming.
We got chatting to another table who had just had a very similar experience. Avoid this place at all costs!!! Go to franklins/the Palmerston/edt/anywhere else. No stars.
