I just had my birthday celebrations at The Portman last weekend and I have to say....it was fantastic!!
The service and food were great and the entire group were made to feel welcome and relaxed. I couldn't really have asked for anything more!
If I could pick them up on anything it would be that I would have liked to have been there for longer, but like most pubs the licence only allows so much fun!
I highly recommend!
Last night I had one of the worst dining experiences of my life at the Portman. We arrived in a large group, having pre ordered our meals. Apparently, they had made a mistake and booked 2 large parties at the same time, in the same evening.
However, an hour and a half later (!!) we still had no food, nor had the other table. There was NO management of the situation, no apologies, just visible panic on their part. They did not offer us any bread/olives/snacks to keep us going, did not offer to buy us our wine as a consolation, nor did they even check on us to see if we were OK.
In the end, we walked out without our dinner and I believe the other large party was not close behind us.
I understand that mistakes happen in the restaurant business, but their handling of the situation was not acceptable. Would not recommend for a large party, although obviously cannot rate the food, despite spending over 90 minutes in their dining premises.
Its staggering how badly run a pub can be, I am local to the area and have never seen so many employees come and go, as soon as you start a rapor with any of the staff the sooner they seem to disappear. The food is great however it has no identity and it seems is trying to be something its not. I believe the owner Mr Meredith has two more efforts, the only running footman which is surely busy by default and a rather lovely pub up angel way. its a shame that he cant get this right, the future certainly does not look bright for this venture unless they really focus on whats important.
