The ViewLondon Review
Commercial Street's own regal principality is four walls of fun for all.
The Venue
A short walk from Aldgate East, The Princess Alice is located far enough from the business end of Brick Lane and Shoreditch to avoid the crush but is close enough to entice visitors.
The green tiles on the facade and the darkness inside make the pub look like some kind of deformed wine bottle as the light bounces off the emerald surfaces. The building offers a spacious layout of old leather armchairs, sofas and tables. Amongst the seating there is space to move freely and the pool table and dartboard make especially good use of the fact.
The Atmosphere
The Princess Alice has a solid character and it’s a place where you can relax without judgemental eyes casting opinions in your direction from beneath styled fringes. The clientele is mostly the sort you’d expect to find in the East End, with a little touch of the original local about it.
Most of the crowd are easily in their mid-twenties and migrate towards the pub by night once the daylight atmosphere of Brick Lane winds up. The staff are personal and polite with their service. There’s also an internet jukebox that can reach out to the world and bring anything back.
The Drink
The Princess Alice may be decorated like a thousand other Hoxton hangouts but when it comes to the drink selection it doesn’t have the Old Street sense of adventure.
The wine list is fair to middling with a small selection by the glass or bottle and there are no frills on the spirits. The draught selection at the Princess Alice is weak by the area’s standards. The choice is between Fosters, Kronenbourg and Grolsch on tap.
The Last Word
The Princess Alice is a good looking pub that errs on the side of East End chic with a subtlety that others often lack.
