November 2010: It's a shame what happened to this once so world famous venue. The new "management" has got is all wrong. Music, lightning, staff. Apparently they are now trying to attract younger guests, so the music is now gross dancefloor beats which is so uncomfortable for all the 50+ y old regulars. During the day the ground floor pub has the atmosphere of a shopping mall cafeteria (trying to cater to the taste of shoppers from the nearby Oxford street) and at night the place is as attractive as a train station waiting room (bad bright lightning, atrocious hit radio music). In the basement club you see two, three drunken chavs on the dancefloor surrounded by a few disappointed faces of the remaining regulars hoping for the club's good old days to return some day and tourists who know The Quebec from London trips some time ago. The sick idea of turning the club into a Soho style club for the younger has gone completely belly up and I am sure The Quebec is soon about to close. Even Saturday nights the place is now half empty. The staff is so incompetent about everything (drinks, service, music etc.) that it spoils the entire nightclub experience. My strong personal hope for 2011 - a new management taking over The Quebec to rekindle the once so gorgeous atmosphere of The Quebec by going back to the roots with competent, friendly staff, relaxed music (have you ever heard of Frank Sinatra?), lights creating pleasant moods etc.
This is a great pub for the older gay man and it has a very good atmosphere of being cruisy but also friendly. However it suffers from poor management. The toilets in the basement smell due to inadequate cleaning, and basic maintenance (e. G. Taps) is not properly carried out. The pony-tailed doorman is not an asset to the team, some of whom are quite good. The pace needs a strong manager who is determined to achieve high standards in all areas.
There is nothing on the website to tell you who is on the show on a sunday ant the owner should get rid of chris (the welsh queen) who is hated by most of the customers apart from the manager james
I am a regular and know it well but it would be more informative as a web site if the various events; Karioke; quiz night; Cabaret (including artist) & times were listed here.
As for the music on saturday it seems to cater mostly to arab choices. Since it is well known to cater for the older crowd, why not have a few old songs now & then maybe not the charlston but what about music from the sixties or seventies!
It would get the older crowd bopping as well. The air conditioning is somewhat perverse at times. When it gets hot the conditioning seems to be off.
At the rear of the downstairs bar towards the seating area, why is the music so loud that a conversation is really quite difficult.
Perhaps a slightly moderated sound and people in the vicinity would not be blasted out so much, the speakers are after all nearly at ear level.
When the potman collects the glasses it should be his job to wipe the tables. (Sore point for some) you know -wet sleeves soaked in beer!
Whilst I enjoy the pub very much and I want it to prosper in these chastened times, a few improvements could make it more successful.
It may be the one of the best place for mature gay men and their admirers in Europe but it's not the oldest gay bar in London - the William IV in Hampstead and The Quebec in Chelsea were both around before and during WW2.
the bouncers are fine but i agree about the dj- he plays crap music completely unsuitable for the clientele - which attracts the weirder dance, dance, dance (but you can't and you look stupid) crowd which is why most people stay upstairs now on fridays and saturdays
