The ViewLondon Review
With an eclectic mix of beers and ales, hearty plates of food and a warm, cosy atmosphere once you’re settled in, The Queen’s Head has everything you’d want from a classic pub with some welcome little extras.
The Venue
Off the beaten track about ten minutes’ walk from King’s Cross station, the exterior of The Queen’s Head doesn’t give much away. Inside you’ll find dark wooden floors and Chesterfield sofas here and there, with tables and chairs arranged in a casual fashion. The bar is dimly lit giving the place a secluded, laid-back feel with plenty of space for groups.
The Atmosphere
With most of the seating at the back or pushed to the sides of the room, at first glance the bar could feel a bit empty, but as you spot the board games, chess set and books around the room, you’ll start to feel more at home. The staff are more than helpful and happy to give you suggestions when you’re choosing your drinks, and they’ll often give you a taster before you buy if you’re not sure what to order.
The Food
There’s a small selection of dishes available, all perfectly suited to soaking up the huge range of beers and lagers. The meat board (£8.50) is packed with chorizo, Parma ham, salami, mixed olives and bread, and the cheese board (£7.50) is laden with huge chunks of four different cheeses, chutney and oatcakes. If you can’t decide which one to have, you can go for the mix of two meats and two cheeses for £8.50. There’s also a Melton Mowbray pork pie with piccalilli at £6 for the whole thing and £3.50 for half, and a chunky cheese sandwich (£4.50) with cheddar, chutney and two wedges of bread – a comforting treat when you’re peckish.
The Drink
There’s a wide range of ales, blonde beers, ciders, lagers and bitters, from the well-known to the more unusual. Guinness is priced at £3.60, Camden Town Pale Ale at £3.20 and increasingly popular BrewDog Punk IPA at £3.60. There are a few wines and a good range of spirits – with the bartender happy to rustle up a cocktail if you fancy it – but beer is the thing here, with regular beer festivals bringing in the crowds.
The Last Word
Good, honest food with incredible portions, great beers and a friendly, home-from-home atmosphere, The Queen’s Head is definitely worth a visit.
