The ViewLondon Review
Just across the road from Stamford Brook station, on the border of Hammersmith and Chiswick, The Raven has become best known in recent times for being the pub Lady Gaga breezed into on a recent trip to the capital.
The Venue
The photo behind the bar may be a little blurry but there’s no mistaking the mush of Lady Gaga cosying up with the staff of The Raven. What’s most remarkable is that she chose The Raven for a drink as it’s by no means the best pub in London. It’s not even the best pub round these parts.
The Atmosphere
During the day, it’s all fairly civilised as affluent locals congregate for drinks; in the evening it gets livelier – the odd live music and comedy night helps – and when global superstars breeze through, expect a frisson of excitement in the air. With a big screen in the back room and a plasma in the front bar, footie and ‘ruggers’ is shown.
The Food
Steaks, fish and chips and burgers are available with a selection of sharing snacks on offer too. Most mains are less than a tenner and the steak is only £12.95.
The Drink
A disappointing selection of lager – Kronenbourg and Fosters – is supplemented by a couple of rotating ales from the likes of Adnams. Pints are on the pricey side too: a pint of Kronie is around £3.70. The wine list is more inventive and it’s scribbled on a blackboard by the bar.
The Last Word
The tourist buses are unlikely to park outside The Raven just yet, but if ooh-la-la Lady Gaga repeats her visit the next time she’s in town, then, who knows, The Raven may well be in the glare of the global press once again.
