The ViewLondon Review
It’s unusual to find a bar of this size and calibre tucked away in suburbia. The Rectory is a jewel in Purley’s crown.
The Venue
This is an attractive venue. With wooden panelled walls and a very large bar area, it is a warm and inviting. The obligatory comfy chairs situated by the window lure in passers-by for a quick drink or a bite to eat and there is a well-stocked bar with attractive back lighting and mirrors. Just around the corner is a VIP area, complete with a wide screen TV and an area for a DJ which can be reserved for free. The designated dining area has plenty of high chairs for little guests, making this a good choice for families.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere is relaxed as local workers and residents pop in during lunch time for a tasty meal, and after work before the journey home. The Rectory really comes alive at the weekend when a younger contingent arrive to either plot up for the evening, or warm-up before heading to Croydon to hit a club.
The Food
With plenty of snacks and starters, or 2 main meals for only £6.99, it’s not going to break the bank. Curry nights take place on Thursday and cost only £5.99 with a drink. Some of the traditional classics include faggots with Black Sheep ale gravy on mashed potato and peas for £6.25, or slow-cooked pork in creamy Aspall cider sauce with mash, carrots and peas for £5.99. Desserts are £2.99, with choices such as a huge Jaffa Cake pudding served with ice cream and toffee sauce. Children’s menus are also available, priced from £3.50.
The Drink
With a choice of 11 lagers, ales and ciders on draft, you are spoilt for choice. A pint of Carling will set you back £2.75. There are also several choices of bottled drinks available including Corona, Kopparberg and Brothers. The house wines starts at £2.85 for a rose
zinfandel, rising to £3.25 for a pinot noir. Champagne starts at £22.50 for the house, and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot is £37.50.
The Last Word
A really nice pub in a relatively sleepy suburb.
