A pub with a history spanning over 200 years, The Red Cow is now Young’s Brewery owned and, as you might expect, offers good beer at reasonable prices.

The Venue
Like many watering holes in Richmond – particularly those owned by Young’s – The Red Cow is located within a sprawling period building more associated with country pubs rather than London-based boozers. There’s even a huge tree that has grown up against the side of the building, overlooking an outdoor area filled with benches. Inside, the décor is muted with creams and dark reds complementing the swathes of wood that covers everything from the large corner bar to the many tables and chairs that are dotted around. Ugly pub rugs are also, of course, ever present. However, the period features have been thoughtfully retained and there is an inherent cosiness to the space that is very endearing.

The Atmosphere
On a Friday night the Red Cow can get busy, which strips it of its laid back appeal. Visit on a quiet mid-week evening and you are more likely to be able to appreciate its countryside appeal. Still, even when the bar is heaving the staff do a great job of staying on top of everything and are still happy to talk to you about their choice of beer and offer recommendations. They also try to keep their punters entertained here with regular live music events, quiz nights and by screening the big games on their TVs.

The Drink
Being a Young’s pub you can expect the usual collection of their brews. At The Red Cow they keep their pipes very clean and, as a result, have been given the nod by CAMRA. Young’s Ordinary and Special make their usual appearance on the pumps and are joined by Young’s pilsner. Then there’s the seasonal Winter Warmer (or Waggledance in the summer).

The Last Word
The Red Cow is another example of a quality Young’s pub in Richmond. It almost makes you want to move there. Almost.
