The ViewLondon Review
The Redback is a fun, cheap and cheerful Australian bar with live music, on stage competitions and real prizes to keep punters well involved. The VenueThe Redback is based in the heart of Acton and has been around for donkeys years. The actual bar is split across the ground level, the different zones divided by stairways. Upon entering, the circular main bar is located in the middle with two smaller bars on opposite sides of a huge dancefloor and stage. The general decor is quite dark with wooden panelling and mauve walls. There are games machines at different spots around the bar and a cloakroom.
There is a large back garden open during the daytime on weekends where barbeques are often held. Special events take place like 'ladies night out’ where male strippers strut their stuff. As a sporting nation, all major events are also shown live on screen during the week and on weekends.
The AtmosphereThe Redback gets very busy on weekends with long queues controlled by big, tough but friendly bouncers. Provided you’re not drunk on the door or thrown out for loutish behaviour, they are accommodating. Punters are predominantly antipodean; all guests are like-minded with light hearted spirits, up for a good laugh. The bar gets very crowded on weekends and the dancefloor is so tight it’s difficult not to bump into anyone, but don’t expect any snide remarks or a shove back because people are generally understanding.
The staff are good looking and helpful and the service is quick considering how busy it gets. The Redback could be classified as a bit of a meat market but, as everyone tends to be good looking, it’s a compliment rather than a headache. The floor gets really mucky from spilt drinks so trainers are probably a safer option - the dress code is relaxed.
The MusicRock music is played by live bands with tunes from the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Kaiser Chiefs. When the band leave the DJ kicks in some old cheesy classics, chart hits and pop mixed in with some dance and house.
The DrinkDrinks are cheap. Native Australian beers and snake bite are the most popular choices; however, brand spirits and wines are also on offer.
The Last WordIf you’re not fussed about going to a classy bar and don’t mind getting your shoes dirty then The Redback Tavern may be right up your street.
