The ViewLondon Review
A homely, traditional pub, the locals of Poplar are lucky to have such a pleasant old place so close to hand. The VenueWith an uninspiring exterior, you might pass by The Resolute thinking it’s a bit of a dive. If you take the plunge, however, you’ll be treated to a traditional pub that makes the most of its heritage.
An old style bar separates the two sides of the venue and is buffed to an impressive gleam. The seating is reminiscent of an olde day pub but it’s kept very well and instead of feeling tired it’s actually comfortable and welcoming. Plenty of space makes sitting with the locals at the bar an appetising prospect, and those looking for a little more privacy can retire to one of the many comfortable benches.
The AtmosphereChock full of locals who clearly know a good thing when they see it, The Resolute is a friendly and welcoming establishment. It’s a typical local pub full of those supping well earned afternoon beers, or those establishing a vibrant yet amiable atmosphere later on in the evening. Weekends don’t get hugely busy but manage to retain the friendly feel that many other pubs in the area lack.
The FoodSimple pub grub is the order of the day here, with the perfectly adequate scampi and chips, burger and chips, and gammon all offering good value. Outrageously cheap jacket potatoes are good choices for the hard up, whilst Friday sees fresh fish from the nearby Billingsgate Market cooked to order. What’s on offer here isn’t anything to write home about but it's certainly good enough - and is excellent value.
The DrinkVery well kept beers keep the locals happy, and seeing as many of them seem to be ale enthusiasts Pedigree and London Pride are suitably superb. There are few wines on offer, representing good value for money, whilst all the usual spirit suspects are accounted for. If you do visit The Resolute and are fond of a beer, make sure you follow the locals and give the ales a go as they really are worth sampling.
The Last WordA really pleasant traditional pub, it would be a boon to the industry if every neighbourhood had a local like The Resolute.
