The ViewLondon Review
The Rocket is young, cool and crazily cheap. It’s a scream.
The Venue
Part of the popular cheap Scream Pubs chain, The Rocket is a pretty old-timer turned into a place more suited to students and those chasing a bargain night out. The fun decor is cartoonish in its nature - the signage reminds you of speech bubbles and the main announcements are made by a giant DJ squirrel on the wall. Above the entrance, a black and white cartoon city is reminiscent of Toon Town.
Other decorative elements are more retro in style, think granny lamps on tall stands and heavy velvet curtains mixed with a lamp made of beer mugs, chandeliers enlivened by colourful light bulbs, mix and match wooden furniture and a popular pool table. An outside patio is an added comfort for smokers, although the traffic from Euston Road hardly makes it a relaxing spot for a quick smoke.
The Atmosphere
The Rocket is unmistakably young spirited - this pub is your dream university bar. The many screens show live sports, the music is contemporary or vintage and the people tend to be those happy, relaxed pub goers in their early twenties. However, this place is also remarkably cheap and the prices attract a mix of people for lunch and after work. Those not in their twenties look slightly out of place but there’s no arguing with a £4 burger and pint deal.
The Food
The menu is colourful and full of illustrations, much like the pub itself. It’s also one of the main attractions of The Rocket as the prices are low and there’s a good variety of dishes on offer. Predictably, they’re trying to please their young crowd and burgers are their main dish (£3.50-£6.75). Pick from a classic beef or experiment with chorizo and halloumi, stilton and Worcester sauce and many others.
You can also order global favourites like lasagne, chicken balti or the Texan steak melt sandwich (£4-£7.50). And if you find £3.50 for a classic burger too expensive (it includes chips), then you can take advantage of the meal deals - two mains for £6 or burger, chips and a pint for a mere £4-£6. Sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes and other dishes are also featured. The desserts (£2.75-£6) are particularly tempting. A banana split or chocolate peanut butter pie will only cost you £2.75 and other options include a white chocolate fondue platter, Scream sundae and New York style cheesecake.
The Drink
The selection of draught beer - think Carlsberg, Tetleys, Stella and Hoegaarden - isn’t very exciting but prices remain cheap with pints priced at £2.55-£3.30. With the bottles things improve. Choose from Budweiser, Corona, Brothers Strawberry and Pear and Magners.
Spirits and wine are priced accordingly at no more than £8 for a bottle of red or white. The selection is bit limited but the price cannot be beaten. Champagne here is a real bargain - a bottle of Moet and Chandon matches its supermarket price at £25. Regular deals and money-off nights see the prices of drinks drop even further.
The Last Word
The aesthetic and low prices of The Rocket are worthy of praise, although you will only appreciate the atmosphere if you fall into their chosen demographic. Come with a mate for a pint, burger and a game of pool and you’ll get the best out of this place.
