I live in hammersmith myself and i have been drinking in the rutland now for just short of a year, there was a slight problem with poorly trained staff for a few weeks after the referbishment however i have found recnetly that the pub has regained some of its former glory.
with a lovely seating area outside the pub and a wide range of drinks its a nice spot to head to in the summer months, the music is a mixture of some more modern stuff and some older. I personaly have found in the last few months that the pub has become quite a nice place to be the staff there now are all freindly and willing to help and food has its ups and down. The food is always to a high standard but it has taken a while a few times, the times it has taken a while however looking at how busy its been has explained it.
In general the pub is warm and freindly the drinks are cheap and the food is beautiful. Its a shame that more people dont like it because iv never had a problem in a whole year of drinking here.
Heard about the refurbishment and thought I would go down to The Rutland to take a look. I was very impressed with the way they did this pub up, sadly I was very disappointed with the service and the attitude of the manager who I found to be loud and abusive. Service from the staff was slow and to be honest I don't think they had a clue what they were doing. I will not be returning unless things get better
The beer here was well kept and good. There was a considerable issue with staff however. The poor bar manager was trying to explain to an inexperienced and frought barman that he should work HIS end, so that it was clear who was first. There also seemed to be an issue in the kitchen, which the punters got wind of thanks to loud conversations on the matter. It took ages to get served and a que jumper was able to jump without being challenged. Beers that were 'off' weren't known by the staff, who'd come back after trying every tap in a confusion. The bar manager seemed to know what was going on but not his staff!
Also, for some reason they charged me about £6 (the same as 2 pints) for one pint and one lime-and-soda. I have NEVER been to a bar where fizzy water and a dash of lime cordial cost the same as a pint of lager. Either they are blatantly taking advantage of designated drivers by over charging or (as I suspect) an error due to overworked, poorly trained staff.
The staffing and strange prices drove us to the pub next door which is a shame because the decor and range of drinks/food here was better. They do need to train their staff though, because good food/drink on the menu is no good if the customers can't get to it!
Hi there, I used to work at the Rutland and lost contact with Tony and Lorraine Quenn who were the manager in 1984-1986.
Can anyone help me to get in touch with them, please?
Kind regards, Gustavo Lyra
Yes its in a great spot by the river. But if you want a drink or, heaven forbid, some food, try elsewhere. With no one behind the bar half the time - only occasionally the one barman making an appearance - we had to wait ages just to get a beer. When we ordered food it took almost an hour - for some chips. Which came out burnt. Try the Dove or the Blue Anchor instead fellas.
The Rutland was fairly average, and had limited atmosphere. During the summer months it can be quite pleasant to sit by the river, but inside is rather plain. Prices are reasonable enough. The Rutland also has a fair share of young people who drink there.
The main thing going for The Rutland is that it's on the river but I'm afraid there are much better places in the area than this. It attracts a bunch of shouting students who are really annoying.
The Rutland is cheap and does have outdoor seating, but they need more in my opinion.
