Very much a back-to-basics pub with its own understated charms, the Shakespeare is a local favourite in deepest Stoke Newington – the Bard would be proud.

The Venue
Located in a quiet, gentrified backstreet near Clissold Park, the Shakespeare is an old-school pub with a devoted local clientèle. Its white exterior and modest outdoor terrace give way to a wooden-floored inner room, with the 360-degree oak bar right in the middle. Seating comes in the form of pews and beaten up armchairs, as well as a selection of stools and sofas, whilst the decoration ranges from the inspired – old-time billboards advertising tipples throughout the ages and an ornate fireplace in the far corner – to the bizarre, notably a giant fibreglass sculpture of a bare-breasted woman which inexplicably takes up a large stretch of wall. Elsewhere, a few minor touches such as abstract paintings, velvet curtains and opaque window panes lend the establishment an antiquated feel that suits its customers just fine.

The Atmosphere
While not exactly the beating heart of Stoke Newington, the Shakespeare does command an impressive local following and is usually just about full enough to allow for a nice, relaxed chat without seeming too empty. The vibe is so laid-back it's horizontal, with extremely amiable staff and friendly regulars, although a bit of music wouldn't go amiss from time to time. There is an entertaining pub quiz every Monday night, and the pub's timeless feel is flexible enough to accommodate two flatscreen TVs which broadcast a range of sporting events throughout the week.

The Food
No real food to speak of, although snacks such as crisps, nuts and pork scratchings are available on request, usually for under £1.

The Drink
The beer selection at the Shakespeare goes above and beyond the usual brands, with Palm, Litovel and Honey Dew on draught (£3.50 a pint) and Fruli in bottles. The hard to find Rothaus even gets its own customized pump to the forefront of the bar. There is a small but handy wine list to choose from as well, and the old-fashioned feel of the place is kept up with the inclusion of dandelion and burdock among the soft drinks. There are all sorts of spirits and mixers too, should you feel the need to stray off the beaten path, although this is very much the opposite of a cocktail bar.

The Last Word
Unassuming but warm and friendly, the Shakespeare may not be on everybody's radar, but you can't help but feel that the patrons wouldn't have it any other way.
