The ViewLondon Review
Take a journey through fiction at this fine example of a tourist-trap pub getting it right. With a replica of Sherlock Holmes’ study included, it’s a must for both pub-lovers and fans of the fictional detective alike.
The Venue
The Sherlock Holmes, previously known as the Northumberland, is an homage to the great fictional detective. It’s situated across two levels with the bar located on the ground floor and the restaurant and a small, pretty outdoor terrace found upstairs. Adjacent to the restaurant, fully visible from all tables, is a replica of Holmes’ study. Decorated in traditional style with dark wood and Victorian lighting, the pub is probably similar to many Detective Holmes may have visited.
The Atmosphere
There is a nice feeling here and even with the slightly spooky study upstairs, you may find yourself whiling away the hours with a nice cold drink, particularly sitting in the terraced area, which is a real sun trap. Tourists are regular visitors - especially Sherlock Holmes aficionados - as well as local workers so be warned, it gets busy during peak hours.
The Food
Bar food is available downstairs – expect the usual pub grub at reasonable prices: sandwiches cost from £4.75 - a Ploughman comes in at £6.45 - with a good variety of hot mains at £6.75. Desserts are also on the menu at £4.25. Upstairs in the restaurant is a similar menu with larger portions, many with reference to Sherlock Holmes in the dish names. Again it’s reasonably priced with mains around £9.75, but it is advisable to book a table in advance.
The Drink
A wide selection of ales are available on tap at the Sherlock Holmes, as is Stella, Carling and Fosters. Also bottled are a choice of ales, ciders and European lagers. Wine is reasonably priced from £4.50 for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot, increasing to £5.70 for a crisp Chardonnay or a fruity Chianti Reserva.
The Last Word
This pub is a must for all Sherlock Holmes fans. If you want to take a trip into fictional history this is a venue not to be missed.
