I went to this pub because we (me and my boyfriend) never had a pub lunch so this was our first time. We chose this pub because it looks cosy inside. It was quite warm as well and menu offered a choice of meals for a vegetarian.
I am offering only 1 star because it was the worst meal I had in my life. I am a vegetarian so I ordered a vegetarian fish and chips which means I got halloumi cheese instead of fish and I went for mash instead of chips. I had garlic bread as a starter.
Starter arrived after 25 minutes and it was an ordinary baguette soaked in oil with cheese on top. There was not much difference between the one we ordered and the one you can buy in Tesco. Main meal arrived about 10 minutes later. The cheese I had was so salty I was worried about my health. It tasted like pure salt with a hint of cheese so I only had one slice out of 3. The mash certainly wasn't made with mayonnaise or cream but water. It was tasteless and watery. The only things that was okay was the peas but it's something that is hard to spoil.
The only not bad thing is the price of the food. I very rarely give reviews but I have to warn people about this place. My boyfriend wasn't impressed with his Roast of the day either.
We went to the Silver Cross for a Saturday lunch on a late November lunch around 1-ish. I couldn't resist the urge to try out their traditional roast beef lunch with all the trimmings-3 Veg, Yorkshire puddings, gravy etc although there was quite a few meals that sounded just as good. My wife had a Sausage roll and chips and we shared a side dish of garlic bread with cheddar cheese. We placed our order at the bar with a rookie who managed to get through our hearty meal order eventually and given our cutlery and table number.
For a first time pub experience in London,it set a benchmark that i hoped to find at any other venues we intended to visit over our stay in the area. Our meals arrived in reasonable time and looked great...As we say down-under, the roast was real Mans Food feed which i struggled to finish. I ordered a serve of the dessert of the day because it sounded divine, Treacle Pudding with Hot Custard.. MMMMMMM....I think a few people around our table ordered it after watching me and my wife enjoy every bit of that pudding and the presentation of the dish....Supereb...Definately recommend this pub for any new visitors or locals to try out but it's best if you get in early as when we left, it was getting packed to the rafters.
I took my wife and young son here for Easter Lunch. The place smelt like it hadn't been cleaned for a week, but given we are new to the area decided to grin and bear it.
Many of the other diners coming into the building were being seen to by staff. I'm not sure if it was because we had a child with us or they just didn't notice us stood there waiting.
We were left standing around for at least 5 minutes. After taking the initiative, we sat down at a table.
I went to the bar to order the Roast of the day. I asked very politely for 2 adult portions and a small one for my four year old, and was told they only come in 1 size.
When I asked if they could just put a little less on his plate and that I'd still pay for 3 full portions the unfriendly barman told me that it didnt matter how much I paid, they only come in one size.
At this point I'd had enough and told the barman we were going to find somewhere else.
He looked at me with one of those "Does it look like I give a flip" type of looks that teenagers usually reserve for their parents, and moved on to serve the apathetic idiot who had been standing next to me the whole time pretending not to listen.
We then went to The Old Shades, a couple of doors down where we were given excellent service, and excellent food in lovely surroundings.
If you value your dignity, avoid this awful place like the plague. If you like a nice old pub with good food. Go to the Old Shades, two doors down.
If I could give this stinking excuse for a pub 0 stars I would have done.
The Silver Cross is much bigger inside than it looks with nice decor; pretty and traditional looking. The Silver Cross attracts quite a few tourists so prepare for it to be busy. Aside from the tourists there are lots of suits at the bar. The staff are often pressed for time so don't expect a friendly chat.
